Can was utterly surprised by Sanem's outburst. He knew she had tried to leave the agency before, back when he didn't know the truth about Emre, but he thought they were past that.
He thought things could go back to some sense of normality; an employee and her boss during the day, two good friends out of office hours.
"What?" Can shifted in his chair, Ceyda's hand falling from his arm as he fidgeted. As much as he wanted to grab Sanem by the forearms and demand that she stay, he knew he couldn't, at least not right now. He couldn't make a scene in front of Ceyda. With the agency's finances slipping, Can knew he needed the help from Ceyda. She was a successful business woman who was level-headed; she was exactly the miracle that the agency needed. And he knew, deep down, she had always fancied him. Can was ashamedly using Ceyda's crush on him as leverage, just for the sake of the company his father had worked so hard to build. If a few dinners and lingering touches saved the company his beloved father had worked so hard for, Can was going to have to do it. "Sanem, we will discuss your contract after my meeting."
"But Mr. Can-" Like her usual care-free self, Sanem tried to dispute Can but he was quick to cut her off.
"Sanem, not now, please." Can swiped his fingers through his hair and sighed.
What was going through Sanem's pretty little head now? What had changed so suddenly?
With a slight nod to her head, Sanem walked out of the office with the first signs of tears brimming in her eyes.
Can was making this harder for her. She didn't want to have to face him again because she knew what he'd ask. He'd ask her why – why she was leaving? Why now? And she couldn't answer that question without making herself emotional again. She couldn't look him in the eye and disappoint him yet again. How was she meant to tell the man that she loved that she didn't want to be his friend? That being his friend broke her heart little by little every day. That seeing his face brought back memories that she knew she would never be able to relive again.
It was hopeless and Sanem knew she only had one other feasible option; an option she despised.
Emre.
Emre, Can's younger brother, had been the one who had hired Sanem. He hadn't even met her before agreeing to her contract. It meant that he had just as much of a decision into Sanem's dismissal as Can did, regardless of their rocky relationship. And as much as she didn't want to ask for his help, she knew she had to at least try.
So, she called him.
"Sanem?" Emre's voice was clearly full of confusion as he answered the phone. For the past few weeks he'd been blaming the brunette for screwing up his life. If it hadn't been for Sanem, he'd still have a relationship with his brother; they'd still be having a drink together in the evenings and joking about their love lives in the garden of their home.
Now, Emre was confined to the hell hole that was living with Aylin. Dating Aylin and living with her were two separate struggles. Aylin was obsessive and manipulative and Emre was noticing that more so now that he lived with twenty-four-seven. It made him miss his older brother and the comforts of their own home even more.
"Mr. Emre, I would like you to fire me."
"What?" Emre's confusion grew the more Sanem spoke. "Sanem, what are you talking about?"
"I'm giving you what you wanted. You wanted to get rid of me, right? Wanted me out of Can's life? So fire me."
"Sanem, I don't work at the company anymore-" As per Can's argument with Emre, Emre hadn't entered the agency's office. He was too scared. He had no idea what was going anymore; his whole life had been flipped upside down since the truth surfaced and yes, he blamed Sanem for it.
