Chapter 9: Shadows of Departure

Exiting the minimart, our group moved cautiously through the mall, the air thick with an unnerving stillness. Whispers of forgotten footsteps echoed in the deserted corridors, and our every movement felt like a disturbance in the eerie calm.

Sally clutched the makeshift weapon she crafted, a chair leg reinforced with makeshift bindings. Hyuni held the dagger, a gift from Hela, with a mix of trepidation and determination. Hela moved gracefully, her katanas glinting in the faint light.

As we approached the exit, the mall's glass doors revealed an unsettling scene. The city outside lay shrouded in an unnatural gloom, the distant echoes of lerkers' growls barely audible. The streets, once bustling with life, now whispered tales of chaos.

Each step outside the mall felt like an entry into a haunted realm. Abandoned cars, silent witnesses to the pandemonium, lined the streets. Storefronts bore scars of looting and desperation, painting a stark picture of a city in ruins.

The ominous journey towards the police station began. We threaded through ominous alleyways, making our way through a city that now seemed to belong to the shadows. The distant wails of lerkers filled the air, chilling our bones and hastening our pace.

"Stay close, and keep an eye on the shadows. We can't afford any surprises," Hela exclaimed, her movements deliberate, as if conducting a symphony of survival.

Hyuni, still adjusting to the new reality, nodded silently. Sally, seemingly unfazed, twirled her chair-leg weapon with a cheeky grin.

"Just call me the Chair-leader of this apocalypse, guys!" Sally proclaimed with a smirk, the glint in her eye reflecting both humor and defiance.

We shared a moment of laughter, a brief respite from the looming darkness that surrounded us. Hela glanced at Blair, a silent understanding passing between them.

"Let's keep moving. We're not far from the police station," Blair stated with a gravity that underscored the severity of their journey.

As we neared our destination, the foreboding structure loomed ahead, a symbol of authority now deserted and forsaken.

Entering the police station, the corridors echoed with our cautious footsteps. Hela led the way with a confidence that only someone who had seen the worst could exude. The atmosphere inside was thick with tension.

"We need to find the armory. It might have supplies we can use," Hela suggested, her eyes scanning the dimly lit surroundings.

Blair, ever vigilant, surveyed the scene, his face revealing the gravity of the situation. Harry, ever the optimist, tried to lighten the mood.

"I hope they have some cool cop gadgets, like those spy pens or maybe a donut stash," Harry quipped, a playful smile adorning his face.

"Donuts? Seriously, Harry? In the middle of a zombie apocalypse?" Sally teased, her laughter cutting through the somber air.

"Hey, a man can dream, can't he?" Harry retorted, his words laced with a mix of humor and determination.

Blair, lost in his own thoughts, nodded in agreement. As we delved deeper, the ominous silence intensified, setting the stage for the unforeseen conflict within the armory.

In the confined space, the encounter with the riot-armored lerker unfolded. The clinking of the armor sent shivers down our spines.

"Really? Armored? How did you even get bitten with armor on?" Blair quirked, a smirk playing on his lips, a momentary respite from the impending danger.

A sudden noise echoed, a metallic growl from the encased enemy. In the ensuing struggle, Blair found himself cornered.

Harry, noticing Blair's predicament, acted swiftly. Armed with a discarded baton, he swung it like a makeshift sword, creating a diversion that allowed Blair to break free from the armored lerker's grasp.

"Blair, you okay?" Harry asked, concern evident in his voice and eyes.

Blair, catching his breath, nodded. Little did they know, the ominous encounter held more secrets than they could fathom. As the shadows deepened, so did the enigma that now traveled with them, a secret peril silently growing within.
