Chapter 19: Unanswered questions.

Dinner went by as normal as it could possibly get. It was surprising, to say the least, that, it was the first tie in my life to have dinner with all of them. There was a long, oval table in the middle of the dining room with eight chairs, three on each side and one at both ends. Gale, Nathaniel's brother sat at one end of the table because he was 'the oldest' and 'cool' while I sat next to Astrid and in front of Daniel.

I never missed the small, loving glimpses he sent in Astrid's way the moment she was talking, lightening up the mood by making jokes since according to her, which I completely agree with, by the way, everyone was being annoying and dull or as she called it a 'party-pooper'  or by just serving the food and being her awesome, sarcastic self. Every time he looked at her, a smirk made its way on my lips and I called him out, breaking him out of his daze just to ask him to pass me the salt or the bread or anything. It was fun to make him stutter and blush but it also made me warm and fuzzy inside, I had always hoped someone would love me and look at me the way Daniel looked at Astrid.

Sam, him, he was being himself. Making weird jokes or joining in on Gale's perverted ones about god knows what and to be honest, I didn't want to know either. They could get really strange and abnormal when they wanted to be.

And lastly, Nath was being Nath. As grumpy as ever. I swear I haven't heard him say a single word during the entire dinner. I know people said not to talk while eating and it could make you choke and all but not saying a single word at all is something I personally couldn't even pull off.

The atmosphere was comfortable and cosy with a nice romantic jazz playing in the background on Gale's CD. That dude is weird. I have no other words to describe him.

Everything was well and I had to ruin the moment by asking for Nath's parents but the answer left as soon as the question was asked and was just as quickly forgotten. They were out of town... again. A slight bit of disappointment was heard in Astrid's voice but didn't pay much attention to it.

I was trying to live in the here and now. I do not know what might happen next or who else will I lose but I try to keep myself on track. I had many things to do and I know that they won't be completed by themselves.

The midterm vacation was coming, I had to wait for that first then I'll get on my parent's case. I can't be defenceless again. Last time, I was barely five, this time I hope I could do something.

End of dinner soon came by, finishing off with Sam's shockingly great chocolate cupcakes, and everyone was off to their home.

"I'll see you tomorrow? Or are you planning on coming with Nath?" Astrid asked as she smiled at me. Something felt off about that smile. Like she was hiding something important.

"Nath and I in the same car might make world war IV come faster than it should," I chuckled as Nath rolled his eyes at me.

"So... Should I take that as a no? Oh, who am I kidding? Of course, it's a no, " she exclaimed and hugged me.

Now, something really is off. Since when does she talk like that?

However, instead of saying anything about it, I watched as Nath and her do that awesome handshake I had gotten to witness the first time, I had met them. She hugged me swiftly, did a final smile and went inside the car with Daniel and Sam.

The door closed behind me and I retreated to the living room, plopping on the couch, recalling everything that happened from the beginning and by putting two and two together.

So, first off, losing my parents to vampires when I was about five. My parents were meeting them head-on. I was caught but not really? I somehow got rescued by I-don't-know-who and that was when I blacked out?
