DIFFERENT !

nadia's pov.

I HONESTLY Could not care less about this new 'mackenzie', whoever she was. sure, i guess i was a tiny bit excited to meet my hypothetical sister. 'sister'. not a sister by blood, she's not my real family.

i mean, who knows? in a month from now we could be getting our nails done and having a fashion show in four different stores. maybe we'd be eating asian food in the mall. possibly.

still, ruby was my only sister by blood. mackenzie couldn't replace her, ever.

"she was supposed to be here by now," ruby rolled her eyes, slouching in the lawn chair.

i continued sitting in my position, my elbow stabbing into my knee and my chin stabbing into my hand, staring down the road. "she's late by three minutes, ruby, not three hours." my voice sounded cranky and annoyed.

uncomfortably, she wrapped her jacket further around her. "it's cold out here. she should hurry up so we can go outside."

"who's choice was it to wait for it out here again?"

"shut up," she whined, "oh! is that her?" her voice raised at least eight pitches when she saw another car drive down our road.

"you don't need to assume every car is mackenzie, ruby," i ran my hand through my hair. "plus, mom said she's coming in a-"

"black ford focus! there she is!" she jumped out of her chair, peeking her head in the door and calling for our mom.

the car pulled in our driveway, and almost immediately a black dr. marten boot smacked against the dark pavement. how could she thank the driver in that amount of time?

after a couple of suitcases hitting the ground, and a flash of a bag being swung around, the car door shut and revealed mackenzie.

not much different than the picture mom showed me; brown hair and eyes. plump lips. perfectly shaped eyebrows. her features were no match to my family's blonde locks. thin, wide grins. freckles and pale skin.

metal chains dangled from her jeans' belt hoops and the top of her boots. her shirt was a black, haltered crop top with some sort of printed logo on it; and she even had a black denim jacket with it. could she get anymore grunge-y?

"she knows we're her family, not her gang, right?" i leaned over, whispering to ruby. she just shrugged.

the car quickly pulled out of the driveway, and she inches closer and closer to us.

"oh, mackenzie dear," my mom walked towards her, "you're absolutely gorgeous. i'm natalie- or mom- whatever you prefer."

"kay," her voice was low, "it's fucking cold out here. anyone gonna help me bring these in? or am i gonna have to carry all three?"

damn.

"i, uh, of course, sweetie," mom grabbed two of her suitcases, and mackenzie held the bag. "nadia, honey, get the door."

i opened the door, the almost unfamiliar smell of cigarette smoke filling the air as the three of them passed.

bitch... ew.

"so..." ruby said awkwardly, "i'm ruby. that's my sister, nadia."

"uh, hey. i saw that in the email. where do i sleep?" she raised an eyebrow, looking around our empty house. it was fairly big, considering only three (now four) of us lived here.

ruby opened her mouth, but i spoke before she could say anything, "i'll show you." i walked in front of the girl, leading her up the steps.

i was seconds from letting something bratty slip, but i figured it would've been a better idea to make a nice first impression. "you can leave your stuff here for now. i bet mom wants us downstairs to figure some things out." she only gave a slight nod, before i turn out of the doorway and went back downstairs.

"nadia? where's mackenzie?" my mother questioned, stirring something in a steaming pot.

"upstairs, unpacking i think."

"tell her that we have guests coming over tonight, meredith and the kids. you three, dress nice because we're going to some fancy restaurant mer likes. afterwards, we're going to come back here and have dessert," she explained, pointed upstairs to the girls' rooms.

"the.. kids? are coming?" my eyes widened, blushing at the thought of my boyfriend being there.

"uh-huh. be ready in twenty, they'll be here in thirty."

"i- okay."
