DIFFERENT!

EVERYTHING WAS SO FUZZY. AND white. it was all white. all she could hear was beeping, and some muffled chatter. it took mackenzie a minute- or 5- to adjust her eyes to the bright room after being in a pool of darkness for God knows how long.

a door clicked open. kenzie tried with all of her strength to lift her head up, and check who it was, but she didn't have the energy. she could barely lift her pointer finger.

"it's been seventy nine days, emmett," a woman's voice said. "don't you think it's time to... you know?"

"seventy nine days is not even three months. i've got faith in this one," a man replied.

her voice lowered to a whisper. "em. she's got no family. nobody is begging us to save her. why are we wasting our materials on a girl with no hope to stay alive, when there's adults in her same situation with families, emmett. there are children, and wives, and parents, and siblings, and cousins and aunts and uncles and in laws and friends of these people who are relying on us to keep them alive. but that's going to be hard, eh? when this girl is here?"

the man completely ignored his coworker, and scribbled something on his clipboard. "why don't you check the patient in room 308. kevin duex. he needs his insulin shots."

footsteps padded on the hard floor, and they came closer and closer to kenzie. she grew frustrated. all she wanted was to see what was going on, but the only thing her eyes laid on was the popcorn textured ceiling.

the man gasped, getting a close look at mackenzie's open eyes. "m-mackenzie? mackenzie ziegler, can you hear me?" he touched her hand, which made the girl flinch, the tiniest bit, as her body didn't contain the energy to react differently.

"shit, shit," the doctor mumbled, fumbling for the remote connected to the hospital bed, and spamming the giant red button to cue the nurses.

"mackenzie, mackenzie. squeeze my hand if you can hear me."

mackenzie couldn't really focus, she couldn't tell what was going on, but it seemed an instinct to squeeze his hand. and so, she did.

"MEG!" the man yelled out, as doctors piled into the room. "she's awake, she's awake."

at once, many hands started grabbing all over mackenzie. she was confused, but couldn't do much about it.

the last thing she remembered, was the same man speaking in a shaky voice and between sniffs. "i knew she could do it. i knew she could."

"GOOD MORNING, SUNSHINE," A familiar voice echoed in mackenzie's ears. "took you awhile."

kenzie's eyes snapped open. they adjusted quickly this time, and she was sitting up. she could finally put a face to the man voice, a middle aged brunette, with stubble and and goatee. "two and a half months, to be exact," he added. "i'm doctor isaacson, but you can call me emmett," he reached his hand out for her to shake, but she only sat there and stared at it.

"i understand," he smiled at the girl. "i ordered up some room service for you, pancakes, fruit, and milk. i hope it sounds okay for your first meal since... well..."
