"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KENZIE, HAPPY birthday to you!" the turner and orlando families sang in unison. "how ooold are y- no? okay," ruby began singing the next part while everyone else stopped.
"the cake says it all," dale orlando grinned, "the big one-eight."
"and still doesn't have her drivers license," ruby frowned, "who's supposed to drive me and my friends around?"
nadia scoffed, "am i chopped liver?"
"you've almost killed me how many times now?" she raised eyebrows at nadia, "the answer is twenty five, but who's counting."
"okay!" natalie turner budded in, "make a wish, kenz." mackenzie leaned closer to the cake, closing her eyes, deciding on a wish, and blowing the candles out.
"what did you wish for?" lauren orlando squealed.
"she can't tell you," johnny thumped his younger sister on the forehead, "it won't come true."
mackenzie grinned, "you really think that?" she turned to lauren, "i wished for a puppy."
"a puppy," nadia said bluntly, "out of all things, a puppy. is gus not enough for you?" she jokingly added. mackenzie looked down at the family's six year old, lazy dog, whom johnny suggested she bring to dinner.
"i want my own puppy," she giggled, "and one that actually walks around the house."
"take notes," natalie said to her daughter's boyfriend, "you are all insane if you believe i can afford a puppy."
johnny nodded and smiled, admiring the girl he called his own. in his eyes, she was so precious. the way she could wish for something as innocent as a dog, yet drink the night away when she was miserable. the way her eyes brightened and her mouth curled when even the tiniest things made her happy. the way she'd invite a lonely man to eat lunch with them at a diner or pay for his meal even though her wallet was nearly empty. most of all, he admired the way she loved, even after all she's been through.
"just out of curiosity, kenz, what's your favorite dog breed?"

YALL yk how in part of this chapter is says kenzie's family's dogs name is gus, WELL that has a story behind it. so as i got a puppy a few weeks ago, we took her to the vet for the first time today AND I THINK SHE HAS A CRUSH! we walked pass this cute ass dog, named gus ofc, and he's like two weeks younger than her. i ship it already and we better be seeing him again soon. #gussie
