MACKENZIE ZIEGLER WALKED hand in hand with her boyfriend, johnny orlando. one of the most simple ways of showing affection, yet still the one that made the girl's heart and stomach go crazy.
her left hand was locked with johnny's as her right hand grasped a pink leash with small pineapple designs on it, which connected to maliboo's leash. at this point, all the worries were set aside in her mind.
i mean, how could you be stressed when everything was perfect? walking down the sidewalk of a long road near mackenzie's home, making their way towards the sunset. the cutest puppy in the world was four feet in front of her, and the cutest boy in the world was at her hip. to top it all off, it was summer vacation.
it felt like a dream.
"there's a dairy queen down the road," johnny broke the comfortable silence. "if you'd like, i can run in and get us something while you wait with mali. or vice versa."
she nodded, a smile on her face. "yes! order me a butterscotch dilly bar? i'll get out my wallet when we get there."
"nonsense," he shook his head, "you paid for lunch."
"oh, it's whatever."
"it's whatever," the boy joked, mocking kenzie's tone of voice.

the young couple sat comfortably in silence while in mackenzie's room, spooning the ice cream out of their cups. they were thankful for the peace and quiet, as it was one of the rare times ruby, nadia, or kenzie's mother weren't poking their head in the room.
the reason johnny was quiet was caused by the overpowering voice in his head. not the voice that drives him crazy, but the one that he quite enjoyed listening to. he stared at his girlfriend, and couldn't help but think about how perfect she was.
her beautiful hair, that reached only to just passed her shoulders. her eyes that glowed, no matter her mood. the smile glued to her face, despite her past. he admired the outfits she wore and the way she only wore mascara on her face. everything about her was perfect; different than anyone he'd ever met.
"orlandooo," mackenzie said in a sing-song tone, "you're staring again."
"how could i not? you're beautiful," he leaned his head on her lap and looked up at her, as she sat cross legged.
"shut up," she blushed. just as johnny had minutes before, she began to pick out things one by one that she loved about the boy.
the way his hair smelled like coconuts and kiwi. some would say 'unmanly', but mackenzie adored it. the way his eyebrows were naturally shades darker than his hair. when his nostrils flared each and every time he laughed. how his clumsy ass constantly had bruises up and down his legs because he was always running into things.
the couple tended to do this quite often; they'd sit close, admire each other. they didn't realize how in love they were.
they were snapped out of their thoughts when the door slammed open. "dinner. it's nachos tonight," ruby said, holding the door open with one hand and texting on her phone with the other. she looked up, "oh, i didn't mean to... interrupt," she snickered, observing the two laying on each other. she closed the door, and walked out of the room.
"i guess that's my queue," johnny sighed, standing up off the bed and stretching.
"you can stay for dinner, you know," kenzie pointed out, also standing up, but on the other side of the bed.
"my mom's cousins are coming for dinner," he rolled his eyes, "otherwise i would." the two walked out of mackenzie's bedroom and down the staircase, facing the turner family who sat at the table.
"see 'ya johnny," nadia waved, and he shot his hand up to signal goodbye before mackenzie walked him out the door.
he unlocked his car from the porch, and then turned back around to look at his girl. "bye, kenz," he kissed her forehead.
"later, orlando," she smiled. before her mind could tell her it was a good or bad idea, the words slipped. "i love you."
the boy chuckled, seeing her embarrassment. her eyes were wide with shock, and she stared at her shoes. "i love you too, kenzie. i'll see you later."
he walked away, a smile still lingering on his face. and it stayed there the entire night.
