"Willow!"
I wake up to see Adelaide leaning over me, shaking my shoulders.
"Oh shit!" I jump up off the couch. "What time is it?" I ask her.
"3:15! And language!" She exclaims and walks to the island to grab her purse. "I called Liz and told her that we were running late."
"Adelaide," I walk over to her. "I am so sorry."
"It's fine." She puts her hand up. "Let's go."
For the second time today we walk in silence, a tension visible. All i really want to do is cry again. I feel like I am doing everything so wrong but i also do not want to try and fix things and end up making things worse. I would not be surprised if i did.
I look over at Adelaide and see her looking around as we walk. Studying the trees, cars, people, houses, and so on. I turn my head back to what is in front of me.
We reach the pier 15 minutes later and see Mrs Ross and her husband at the entrance. Mrs Ross waves and we smile and wave back.
"Liz," Adelaide says as we walk up. "I am so sorry we are late."
"No no no. It is perfectly fine." Mrs. Ross waves her hands in protest. "Anyways, this is my husband, Michael. Michael, this is a fellow teacher, Adelaide and a student of mine, Willow."
Adelaide and I both say hello and smile.
"How are you both?" He asks.
We both smile again and look at each other. "We are doing well," I answer for both of us.
Mrs Ross looks at the both of us questioningly but doesn't say anything.
"So what would you girls like to do first?" Mrs. Ross asks. "We could walk around first and then we could eat. Or if y'all are hungry, we can can eat now?"
Adelaide turns to me. "You hungry?" I shake my head. "No we are good."
"Okay, I vote ferris wheel first because that is the only thing I have wanted to do."
"It's true," Michael says. "The whole drive here she was talking about it."
Adelaide and I chuckle.
We wait in line to go on the ferris wheel. The line is not very long considering that it is the winter time and we are at a beach. The seats are two people per car so Mrs. Ross and her husband go on first and Adelaide and I will go on on the next one.
"Have I mentioned I am terrified of heights?" Adelaide asks as we walk onto the car.
I look at her in surprise. "No. You did not say anything about this."
"Well, yeah." She gives an uneasy smile.
"Babe," I look at her concerned. "We don't have to go on."
"No no," she sits on the seat. "I can do it. I just might have my eyes closed the entire time."
"Are you sure?" I ask her.
"Yeah." She nods her head. "Sit."
I sit down next to her and she grabs my hand immediately after buckling in.
The car starts to move and I feel her grip on my hand get tighter. I rum my thumb along her hand softly. When we reach halfway to the top she opens her eyes.
"Oh god," she squints her eyes shut.
I chuckle. "Hey, you are okay."
We reach the top and the car stops.
"Is it done?" She asks.
"No," i answer. "We are at the top."
She opens her eyes and her grip gets tighter.
"Well," she says nervously. "The view is pretty."
"Eh," I shrug my shoulders. "Not as pretty as you."
She looks at me and smiles. "You're a dork."
I lean over and kiss her cheek and turn to look oit the view. I can still feel her eyes on me but I don't want to turn back. Just knowing that she still is kind of upset. And I know it isn't because of being late. It is because Mrs. Ross almost caught us.
The rest of the ride Adelaide keeps her eyes shut and I let her know when we are close to the ground. She lets go of my hands and we get off at the bottom. Mrs Ross and her husband are waiting at the bottom.
"Did you like that?" Michael asks.
"Yes!" I exclaim. "The view was besutiful. However, this one here." I point to Adelaide. "Is afraid of heights."
"Oh Adelaide you should have said something." Mrs. Ross says.
"No no. I am okay."
Mrs. Ross nods her head. "So i suspect no rollercoaster?"
"Nope," adelaide says. "Sorry."
"Now worries," Mrs. Ross assures Adelaide. "There are plenty of other things to do here."
