'Why did that have to just be a dream?' I asked myself wistfully as I trudged to the dining area to grab a light breakfast of fruit and granola. I just didn't have the heart to eat more. Alex's words were rolling around in my brain like the waves of the ocean.
'My friends and family will be the ones to get me through this, huh? I guess I'd better talk to Vale soon, then. She would be able to do something, hopefully.'
My train of thought derailed when a fairly listless blond ambled across my view. Without thinking, I called out to him and got him to turn around.
"You wanna sit with me, Felyks?" I asked him invitingly, gesturing to the seat one the other side of the cafeteria table. The normally peppy Polish man shrugged and sat down where I'd indicated, but he didn't look happy at all.
"Is something on your mind, Felyks?" I asked carefully while using my fork to stab a chunk of watermelon.
"... Ja," he sighed as he leaned an elbow against the table and rested his head in that hand. "I'm worried about Liet."
"Oh," I said, remembering instantly that Lithuania had been on the list of missing nations. "I know how you feel. I'm sure we'll find them soon, though."
I almost expected him to be angry at the sympathy, which might have been mistaken for pity. Instead, he seemed to recall that I was also worried about a missing nation whom I held dear, so Poland said nothing. He didn't look to be in the mood for eating, however.
"Uh, hey," I said after a moment. "Weren't you a really amazing pilot way back in the day?"
Trust me, I had a reason behind asking this. Felyks, who was "eating" oatmeal, couldn't resist one corner of his mouth pulling up. He dropped his head to look into his bowl, but I still saw that he appreciated the recognition.
"Yeah, I was. Why do you ask?" he inquired.
"I was just thinking," I began. "You know how things just look really bleak right now because we're not doing anything to try and rescue the others? Well, maybe your flying skills could be put to use."
Now I definitely had his attention. "Hey, you totally have a point there."
"Right?" I grinned. "And I'd honestly love to see you fly. I never got to see much of those wars because Alfred made us all stay back in the states."
"Well, like, it wasn't worth going through all that if you just want to see someone fly," Felyks pointed out humorlessly. I couldn't blame him, though. The invasion that began World War Two literally killed him, after all. We matched that way: our wings on our backs. They signified returning to life.
"Oh, I know," I agreed quickly. "And I'm still glad I wasn't there-- but still. Maybe Vash can let you borrow a plane and practice."
Poland's cheek was in his palm, and he gazed up at the ceiling with some sort of fantasy on his mind. "That would be, like, perfect. I seriously need a distraction right now."
I could guess at what vision his mind's eye was preoccupied with; it probably had to do with air strikes on some sort of military base where Lithuania and the other nations were being held as prisoners.
How cool would it be to help rescue them ourselves? I know I wanted to be there when we got our friends back from those ruthless, cutthroat bastards.
Those ruthless, organized, prepared, smart bastards...
Damn. These were just humans, but it seemed like they were outsmarting and outmatching us on every corner we turned in this worldly maze. It was going to take a lot of discipline to whip us all into shape if we were going to go back into the field ourselves.
