So, I recently finished watching a SUPER GREAT anime movie called Wolf Children, and I've noticed that the way I pictured Evan as a toddler is the same way Ame is portrayed when he's little, too. So, that's why I have a gif of cute little Ame on the side of this chapter. Now, without further ado, here is chapter 38!
----------------------------------------------
When I overheard Germany comment to himself that we were almost ready for the next mission, my pulse raced. We were close, we were almost there! If we could just complete our tasks ahead and save everyone who was left in W.O.R.L.D.'s clutches, then all we'd have to do is begin scrubbing W.O.R.L.D. out every facet of our individual countries.
Wipe it off the face of the entire earth, I say! Those good-for-nothing sons of bitches deserve it for what they've done to me and my family.
"Mom!"
The call initiated a flood of raw adrenaline inside of me, and I spun around quickly to see Evan running toward me. He waved as he ran, and I hurried to meet him halfway. A roll of paper was clutched in one of his hands.
"Mom, guess what!" he said excitedly.
"What is it?" I asked, bending over to be closer to his eye level. "Did something happen? Are you alright?"
"What? Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," he replied quickly. His eyes sparkled and his cheeks were flushed from the excitement as well as the run to find me. "I just have to show you something!"
Evan unfurled the piece of paper and held it out, then flipped it around so it wasn't upside-down. "I figured it out, Mom!"
Because we were at the edge of the training grounds, we were not alone, and I could feel that multiple pairs of eyes were on us. "Uhm, honey, let's go somewhere else," I suggested, taking his hand. A breeze picked up, flapping his unfurled paper noisily as we walked.
It was a map of North America, to my confusion. What exactly had my son figured out?
After a short walk, we stopped and I told him it was okay for him to tell me now. "What is it you figured out?"
"I know who I am now!" Evan announced ecstatically, holding out the map proudly for me to see. A circle of dark red marker ink sat around a tiny portion of eastern Oregon. Curiously, I took hold of the map's edges and peered at the circle without taking it from Evan's hands.
"Wait... Is this true?" I asked him, my blue eyes round and wide. "How do you know?"
"I just looked at the map, and I knew," he replied. "Dad always said that I was probably connected to a place somewhere."
I grinned at him, his excitement drifting over to me. "You know what this calls for?"
"No, what?" Evan asked me curiously.
"Let's go see Vale. We're going on a little field trip."
~
"Really? You figured out what you are all on your own, Evan?" Vale asked my son, who looked sheepishly proud of himself. He nodded his reddish-brown head and smiled wide behind his hand. Vale beamed at him. "I always knew you were smart for your age."
"Heehee~" he giggled, clinging to my hand with one of his own. "Thanks..."
"Can we have one of your teleporting earrings for a little bit?" I asked her hopefully. "We want to visit his place for a little bit to make sure that he's really right about where he is."
"Oh, sure," Vale replied, placing the shiny green and gold piece of jewelry in my laid-flat palm. "Try not to be gone for too long, okay? Remember time zones."
