Chapter 5: Erwin's Rule

Eren's POV

The pain of Erwin's throw was painful. I can hardly stand up. Levi offered a hand and I managed to stand up properly.

"Next time, listen.", Levi said, walking away towards his horse.

I felt ashamed. I walked over to my horse and hop on.

"Hey Eren.", I heard Jean. "That'll be a good lesson for ya' eh?".

"Just shut up already!", I replied.

We went on a long way to reach back at the walls. We headed to the headquarters and Erwin's group continued ahead.

We hop off our horses, tied them up and walked inside the headquarters. But I was stopped by Levi for a small talk.

"Hey brat", he called out. I looked behind and walked to him.

"That'll teach you to follow the rules. If you ever disobey, I won't think twice."

"But Captain! What about their lives?!"

"Everyone has their own fate! They die, they die!"

"But don't you even help?! Try saving them?!"

"There are times they won't survive."

"But what if they do?!"

"Just stop! I already said I will not think twice Jeager!"

I already knew what he meant by "I won't think twice" so I nodded slowly and walked to Armin and Mikasa with my head lowered down.

I lost the conversation.

I looked behind at Levi and he was standing there with an angry expression and his arms crossed. I sighed.

Levi's POV

I watched him walk towards his friends. I let out a sigh.

He has a point though. Scouts died because we didn't save them. Just like my squad...

I calmed myself down and walked inside the headquarters. As I was about to sit, Erwin walked into the headquarters with Mike and Hanji. "Levi!", he said.

I looked at him with pissed eyes. "What?".

"I created a new rule."

"And what is that?"

"Scouts always believe that the more members, the greater to succeed. It's time for them to know that death can be our way to survive! Think about it! If you were trapped with your friend and he got caught with all the titans' attention at him. You'll make a run for it instead of dying with him!"

"What kind of a stupid idea is that?!"

"Think Levi! It will bring us a step closer to success if they die instead of us, the strongest! Their sacrifices will also be useful!"

"Fool! A step closer to success?! Sacrifices and death?! Recall what you told me when my old squad died! You said they're worthless you soulless creature!". I cannot contain myself no more so I grabbed Erwin by the collar of his shirt. "So tell me the point of what you just said!".

He grabbed my hand and threw me off the room. It was painful. I gritted my teeth just by looking at him. I struggled to get up.

Eren's POV

I heard a loud racket in the headquarters so me, Armin and Mikasa went inside to know what's going on. I saw Erwin and Levi at different corners of the room.

"What's going on?", I asked.

Erwin looked at me with a stern face then looked back at Levi.

"It shall be announced whether you like it or not Levi.", he said as he walk out of the headquarters, passing by me.

"That reminds me.", he said.

"Eren. Don't be a fool... Like Levi."

He walked away with Mike and Hanji. I walked over to Levi and offered a hand but he just pushed my hand away. He walked into his room and slammed the door shut.

I wondered... I saw paperworks at the table and decided to pick it up. It read:

New Scouts Rule

Death of other people and scouts shall be remembered. But if dying is the step for your friends' life to continue, do it. They're distractions and baits for titans. Instead of both of you dying, only one will. Our population will lessen in less time. We will have more defenses! SASAGEYO!!!

I was shocked. 

Now I know why Levi's pissed. Seems like he's not bad after all.

"Huh? Let me see that.", Armin said as he took the paper and read it.

"Oh my.", he said. "Such a cruel thing.".

I nodded slowly then I heard a door open. I looked behind me and saw Levi leave his room.

"Are you all in favor of this rule?", he began.

"No.", we replied.

"Good... I have a plan."

Levi's POV

I walked towards them and sat down, looking through the papers.

"Let's make him know the taste of his own medicine. If the rule is announced, everyone should follow it. Even his group. If he gets caught by titans, no one will help him. He'll soon be titan food.", I explained.

"So your point here is, his rule will only lead him to his own end?", Eren asked.

"Yes. He will then realize such a mistake. And I don't care what he says. He's the one in the wrong side. I'd rather die with the truth.", I sipped my tea.

"But wouldn't killing him be too harsh?", Eren replied.

"We won't kill him. We just won't help him. Let him realize his mistake."

They thought for a moment and agreed with it. I let out a sigh of relief. I lookd outside through a window. I could see the big walls.

"We'll be going back outside tomorrow. And please... Don't follow Erwin's rule at all cost."

"W-won't he threaten us if we won't sir?", Armin muttered.

"Don't worry. I'll take care of it. But for now, let's just focus on not following."

They nodded...

Whatever happens, their safety is first. They won't follow the rules and there will be punishments. But no... He's wrong. He better learn...
