"Skylar!"
I whip my head around to the sound of my best friend. Lena is running to me and Abby isn't far behind her. I open my arms and Lena is fast to jump into them.
"How is he? Have you heard anything?" She frantically asks while pulling away from me. I hug Abby before responding.
"I haven't heard anything. James is still back there and he hasn't called or texted me about what's going on. I don't know anything other than he was walking home, and someone didn't see him and he was hit." I explain.
"God... Ian..." Lena mumbles as she sits down.
Suddenly, there's a large man that walks into the ER waiting area. We can hear his conversation with the head nurse.
"Hi, um, I'm not sure if this is okay... but I accidentally hit someone tonight and I just needed to know if he is okay or not." The man says.
He's way older. Probably mid-forties. He's wearing old sweatpants and an even older large T-shirt. His hair is a mess, almost as if he'd been running his hands through it all night.
"I'm sorry Sir, but if you're not family, I cannot give you any details regarding a patient." The nurse explains.
My eyes widen. This man must have hit Ian.
"Right. Can I at least wait over there until his family arrives or comes out? I'd like to give them my deepest apologies." The man frowns.
"Of course. Go ahead."
The man turns and slowly walks over to the waiting area. He takes a seat not far from the three of us, and begins looking at his phone.
"You hit someone tonight..." Lena says suddenly, just loud enough for the man to hear.
"Y-yes... it was a complete accident." His frown deepens.
"You hit my boyfriend. Why weren't you paying attention to the road? Were you too busy texting or something?" Lena starts interrogating the poor man. "He could die because of you!" She shouts.
"Lena!" I beg. "Stop! Can't you see that he already feels bad enough? It was just an accident. He didn't intentionally hurt Ian." I try to explain.
"Yeah Lena, come on, let's go get some coffee." Abby soothes while taking Lena away from the man and down the hallway to the coffee machines.
"I'm sorry about my friend... she's a little shaken up." I say.
The man nods before speaking. "I'm really sorry about your friend. He was dressed in black and before I even realized that he was in front of me, it was too late to swerve. It was dark, I couldn't see." He frantically explains with tears in his eyes. "That poor kid. God, I hope I haven't killed him."
The word 'killed' makes me nauseous. Ian cannot be dead. Right?
A few moments later, both Abby and Lena walk back over to sit beside me.
"I'm sorry..." Lena says toward the man.
"Please, no. Don't apologize. I'm the one who is sorry." The man replies.
An entire hour of waiting goes by, before we hear the double doors open. James comes walking out of the back, with what looks to be blood on his shirt. My eyes widen.
