"You so like James Ryan." Abby says as I shoot her a glare.
"Shut the hell up already. I do not like James. I don't like anyone." I roll my eyes.
"Ouch." I hear from behind me. My eyes widen a fraction as James takes a seat next to me, placing his lunch tray on the table. "Way to hit me where it hurts, Sky." He teases, though I see something falter in his eyes.
"Just being real." I shrug.
"Guys! You're never going to believe what I just saw! Avery placed a bunch of water balloons into someone's locker and she's hiding in the hall right now waiting for lunch to be over so she can record it!" Ian announces as he takes his seat beside Lena. Lena visibly froze, but then soon after continues eating her food.
"She's so juvenile." I comment. "Whose locker is she pranking anyway?" I ask.
"No idea, but I can't wait to see which loser she's set up this time." Ian laughs while taking a bite out of a crisp apple.
I laugh at his immaturity, but wonder myself why Avery insists on hurting other people. It's as if she has absolutely no morals and no kind of respect towards other people. I wonder what happened to her to make her feel that way.
We all chat and eat lunch until the bell rings. Everyone exits the cafeteria and heads toward their lockers. I keep glancing around at the other students, just waiting to see which unlucky person Avery has pranked.
"Sky, sleepover tonight?" Lena asks.
"Sure." I smile as I put in my locker combination.
I look up just in time to see Ian and James walking out of the cafeteria. I notice Ian is glancing around the hallways as well, trying to see who is about to be covered in water. I bring my gaze to James who is staring directly at me, and we keep eye contact as I open my locker. My eyes widen just as I'm pummeled with water balloon after water balloon. I turn my head just in time to see Avery recording me and as the last water balloon falls from my locker, I notice it looks different from the others.
In a matter of seconds, I'm covered head to toe in dark blue paint. A scream escapes my lips as Abby and Lena jump back to dodge the blue liquid. Nothing but laughter is heard after my scream, as all of the other students begin pulling out their phones and filming me themselves. I even caught Ian laughing.
When I look over to James, his face is expressionless as he begins to turn around and walk away. Ian soon follows him, and I'm left standing there covered in blue paint while Abby and Lena aren't sure what to do. I feel angry as I watch the back of James and I can't help but lightly chuckle to myself as I knew he wouldn't be there for me like he said he would.
"Let's make a deal, Skylar Reagan."
My name sounded so right coming from his perfect mouth.
"What deal would that be, James Ryan?" I rose an eyebrow.
"Let's make a deal to make this last year in school together, one to remember. No fighting, except the occasional arguing which I'm sure will happen regardless, and we actually get to know each other so we can be real friends."
All of a sudden, I feel a dark presence beside me.
"Maybe I wasn't clear before. Stay the hell away from James, or this is just the beginning of what I can do to you." Avery threatens, not a single ounce of regret in her voice.
