I was pretty confused to say the least but my mind worked fast, trying to decipher the meaning and when it finally did, I felt my eyes widening in surprise even though I tried not to react too much.
I was still quite shaken by the fact but I didn't let my guard down completely as I remembered to ask the question that would confirm suspicion.
" What is the password?"
I couldn't almost hear him as his voice came only as a whisper.
"0..1...7...3"
After hearing what I had to hear, I quickly looked around to see if anyone else was around.
I listened the streets but there was nothing other than the voices of the kids coming back from the school. I quickly turned around to go to the door and grabbed the kitchen towel on my way. I tried my best not to run to the back of the house cause it would attract too much attention.
The moment I saw him again, I kneeled down beside him. My eyes quickly scanned his whole body and I instantly found the wound that was bleeding excessively. I used the towel to pressure the bleeding mess.
" Can you tell me your name?"
He tried to talk but only a series of coughs came out. He pointed with his healthy hand to his jacket. As I touched his collar, I saw the word 'Haven' sewed up to the inner side of this jacket.
"Okay , we need to get you inside. It will get dark soon and we can't stay here. I can't take you to the clinic by myself either. You have to get in from the window since we can't risk people seeing you. It is big enough for you to fit through it, you think you can manage that?"
He nodded and I offered my arm. With a little struggle he stood up. He was pretty tall and his body was well built but his pained face looked young.
I helped him squeeze through the window as he took in few sharp breaths and few short breaks. After I got him inside, I quickly got back home and laid him on Lee's bed.
I knew few things about attending a wound but I needed Esther to treat him. I brought drinking water for him and got some more water with few towels to clean the blood that was all over him. After he took few gulps from the water, he looked like he could maybe converse.
"I'll call the doctor and she will take care of you." Before he could reject, I continued.
"She is the other girl you saw that night so don't worry. We just have to be quick so that you can get back on your feet as soon as possible."
He looked pale and worn out. "Thank you."
I tried to smile. "You'll thank us once we get this done. It is still very risky for you to be here and us helping you. We'll need more than one box of sweets this time."
He coughed while trying to laugh. "Okay."
I let him pressure his wound while I reached for my walkie-talkie. Not all of us had cell phones here so we opted to use walkie talkies as they were convenient and safe to communicate.
"Esther, are you done for today at the clinic?" I waited for few seconds before she answered.
"I was about to clean up. What happened?"
"I need you to be fast, I need you in the house. Very urgent."
She didn't panic or ask what happened. She knew I only ever called her home when there was an injury. She didn't have to say it but I knew she would bring a medkit with her.
I had to prepare the space for her, so I tried to clear the floor of Lee's room.
"I'm gonna take your shoes off."
He didn't say anything which I accepted as an approval. Took his shoes off and then carefully took off his jacket.
I laid a clear sheet on Lee's night stand and after that, all I had to do was to wait. I took few deep breaths. Before coming to Kaden, we did have lessons about emergency and stress management so I knew that I didn't have any time to panic, I could do all the panicking after we were done.
As I glanced at him, I saw his eyes closing and he was letting go of the towel I gave him. He was losing too much blood. I started to pressure the wound as I started to talk to him in an attempt to keep him awake.
"Thanks for the sweets by the way. I didn't expect anything from you guys to be honest and talked shit behind your back but you proved me wrong."
I saw him smile. "I..fought for them."
"Let me guess, with that guy you were calling 'Cap"
He laughed this time while nodding.
"It was easy to figure out ,you know. Short and rude answers, cold stares. It was pretty obvious he was the party pooper."
I got close to his ear as if I was telling him a secret even though we were the only ones in here.
"He is my least favorite among you guys." His tired smile got bigger.
And just in that moment, I heard the front door opening and right after that I heard Esther calling my name.
"In Lee's room." was all I had to say. I heard quick footsteps and I saw Esther standing in front of the door. Her eyes quickly scanned the room and found me. After she saw that I was just fine she saw the man lying on the bed.
As she approached the bed she started to ask questions.
"When did it happened?" She didn't even ask who he was.
Haven wetted his lips and answered.
"Almost an hour."
Esther took off the towel and looked carefully at his wound. She got closer to see better. She touched his shoulder from different angles.
"It looks like the bullet didn't hit any bone. On the other hand, it probably damaged some vessels. You'll bleed a lot more if I take the bullet out here. You have to go to a hospital."
Haven didn't look like he could answer so I did instead.
"There are rebels everywhere, he can't go back to the military hospital. Can't you do it here?"
"I can't Vanessa. I don't have enough supplies to do it here. I don't have tools to stitch vessels. Everything is in the clinic, we have to get there somehow."
Shee took a glance at Haven.
"He is losing blood. Even though his injury is not deadly, him bleeding can be. We have to deal with this. you rackon we can take him to the clinic."
"How are we gonna hide from the rebels. If they see us, they'll for sure question us."
"We don't have to hide. We had emergency patient at night before . We just have to hide his soldier identity. We'll get him out of his bloody clothes, wrap his shoulder and we'll say that he broke his arm. We'll say that he came here from another village to bring some documents. I'm the village doctor, they'll not suspect me since I treated them before too."
Both of us looked at Haven once more but he was not in any position to protest so we did what we planned to do. We took his bloody jacket and put a clean jacket of Lee's. Wrapped his shoulder with a cloth that Esther took out from her kit.
I turned to Haven.
"You heard our plan. You have to give me your tag. They will most probably search you, we can't risk getting caught. They won't search her, she will keep it with her until you can put it back on."
He just nodded and lifted his head slightly to give us access. We had to get out of here.
