My head was spinning, I was surrounded by boxes. I scrambled back into one of the four corners. This was familiar, the cold metal under me, the blaring alarm, going up at what feels at high speed? It was familiar, I didn't like it. My breath was short and I didn't even realize I was gasping for breath. A suddenly jerk of the cage I was in sent me flying forward, to the middle of the metal room. I couldn't remember anything, nothing, nada, nope. Then two names came to mind, mine, one I knew was Al. The other felt familiar, just as I felt like this was never going to stop, the cage stopped and I was thrown up into the air before hitting the ground, hard.
The ceiling opened and a burst of light came in, "I thought we weren't having anymore greenies."
"It's probably a trick." Another voice said, it sounded familiar.
My eyes shot open and only one thing could leave my mouth, "Ro!" I gasped and fell unconscious.
Newt's POV:
"It's probably a trick," I heard Thomas say. I wanted to agree but the boy down there he looked familiar, a lot like Thomas that's for sure.
Suddenly the boy's eyes opened revealing brown eyes that Thomas shared and then he gasped one name, "Ro!" He then hit the floor with a thud. My mind was racing, this was too much like the girl and Thomas. Whispers were exchanged all around.
"Who is he?"
"Did he say Ro?"
"Isn't that the missing girl's name?"
"What the shuck is going on?"
"He's a spy."
The last one caught me off guard and everything was going crazy. Thomas and Minho survived the maze just a few days ago. Now this boy comes up talking about the girl? I hop down and pick up the boy, with help I got both of us out. Thomas just got out of the slammer a few minutes ago and now a new greenie comes up. Was this some sort of sick joke?
I put the boy on the ground a note fell out of his pocket. I picked it up and opened it. "What does it say?" Chuck asked, many others did the same.
I cleared my throat and began to read the note aloud;
"Dear Al,
I know you're going to go to the maze filled with boys. I want you to remember you're my best friend and I will be with you to the end of the line. Tell Newt, Minho, Thomas, and Chuck hello for me. Help them get out, find the hole at the cliff. If I remember correctly there is a code, use the maze as a code. Tell my dear older brother, Newt I say hello once more.Your friend, Ro."
There was silence in the air and I felt the air go out of my lungs. That is why I felt so attached to Ro, she was my sister. I got back up from my squatting postion, "EVERYONE GET TO DINNER!" I yelled and everyone left in a hurry. Thomas stayed and the Med-Jacks came to check the boy-Al, I think his name is- out to make sure he was doing okay.
Everything was wrong, even Alby told us to be careful with the girl and to protect the maps. Something bad was already in motion and from the sounds of it Ro is being dragged into it. The young boy got up and looked at the four of us older boys and scrambled away. "Al calm down," I tried but his eyes widened.
"H-how do you know me? Where am I? Where is Ro?" He shook his head, he looked terrified. "Everything is wrong! Everything is going to change!" There it was again, someone saying everything's going to change.
"Calm kid, a note fell out of your pocket from Ro, it says your name. You're in the Glade and I don't know where Ro is but this is the only thing from her." I handed him the note which he carefully took as if one wrong move would make it shatter.
"I think I've done this before," Al's voice was faint. "I've come up here, well somewhere else but alone, I think." This had to be Ro's friend that she had told us about. I was a little shocked the boy hadn't klunked his pants or started crying his eyes out. He seemed to refuse to look weak, as if he was a robot trained to do that.
Much like Ro he didn't want to show his feelings, Ro was just a little easy to worry. Al, seemed to not remember anything either, wonderful. The note did say something about the maze being a clue, a code. This kid may help us, I mean he sure remembers more than his name already. "Let's go eat," J suggested. "Alby will want to talk to you."
"Who are you?"
"I'm Newt and this is Tommy."
"Who's Alby?"
"Our leader."
"Am I in trouble?" His voice sounded slightly scared but then he wiped the worry off his face without a thought. I shook my hand and he followed me but stuck close to Tommy. As we arrived there was immediately chatter and pointing to Al. My shock was when the young boy just ignored everyone's looks and went over to Frypan, "Excuse me? Can I have a plate of food for those guys," he pointed at Tommy and I. "and myself. Please and thank you." Frypan smiled, I could tell he liked this kid for his mannering as well as his kindness. He gave Al three plates who came back and gave Tommy and I our food.
"Thank you, Al." Thomas thanked and ate his food while Al stared at his food for a minute before eating. Thomas ran off and Al looked somewhat upset on the matter while Alby came over. He was doing well but I could see his frustration and confusion about the new greenie.
"Newt. Greenie. I want to speak with both of you." I nodded and looked at Al who gave a curious look to Alby who glared at him. Unlike almost everyone else Al didn't flinch or pale he just blinked and looked at me with a smile. What a strange shank.
