Life settled into a happy routine. Mick spent most of his nights with Ohm, but went home usually three nights a week, and Ohm always joined him there. They managed to get to classes mostly on time now, and joined Ohm's friends for lunch in the canteen every day. People still rubbernecked and whispered behind their backs, but they learned not to care too much.
As for Ohm's friends, it was like they were getting to know Ohm for the first time. It took them a while to get used to a happy and smiling, joking version of him. Noh was simply ecstatic to get his old friend back. The unsmiling, hurting version he had known for two years had been a sore trial.
The group were often to be found on the football field, watching games, or rehearsals when Can or some of their other friends played. It was a good spot to catch up on gossip for the week. Ohm had opted out in the first weeks to spend time with Mick instead, but they joined the others one fine hot afternoon. Mick was sitting one step below Ohm, between the taller boy's legs, leaning back against his chest.
The other couples were sitting side by side, some one step lower, leaning against the other's legs. They were happy to be out in the open, their concerns about other students reactions largely blown away by their happiness, and a generally accepting reactions. Phun and Noh glowed with their secret joy. They had agreed to keep Phun's whispered proposal private for now, Noh content to wait for Phun's promised proper occasion.
Ohm saw Mick rub the tattoo on his wrist with a sweet smile on his lips. All the hearts were now yellow, and the message that morning had been: "You are my sunshine." The weather forecast had been for clouds and occasional rain, but luckily it stayed dry during the game.
"I've been meaning to ask, Mick. What's the deal with your tattoo? I thought at first it had a string of red hearts, but they keep changing," Noh asked.
"Actually it's only the outline of hearts. Ohm colors a few of them every morning," Mick said.
"Is there a meaning behind the colors," Can asked.
"Yes, but it's private," Mick said and pulled his sleeve over his wrist.
"How romantic," Noh said, making puking motions. Phun sighed.
"Mmmm," Ohm just said. He was bending over, his mouth at Mick's ear, whispering something that made Mick blush. Ohm purred and turned his head to kiss him, which Mick returned eagerly despite his shyness.
"So it's true. The president of the music club is gay," they heard.
They all looked down and saw a tall boy, who would have been handsome, except for the angry, disdainful look on his face.
"Peck, don't make any trouble," one of his friends cautioned him, but Peck shook his hand off his arm.
"What, are girls not good for you? And letting that pretty boy drape all over you. Kissing him in public?! Have you no pride? I thought you were cool."
