I. Totally meant to post this sooner but. This time of year is. V busy for me. Anyway! This is the third place entry by @SoftyDrinky and their 049 fic! They requested an OC this time around and I had great fun writing him! While writing this one I sort of ended up picturing him having Colin Firth's voice and accent, very Received Pronunciation but a little awkward in mannerisms.
I'll be posting entries over the course of this week so stay tuned!

Nobody really listened to a paranormal reporter, not unless they were mental. You had quickly grown to realise that. Reviews were written about your articles, debunking evidence and trying to prove theories wrong. It wasn't as though you cared, even if people did think your explanations of conspiracies were bat shit. You knew you were right, and one day people would look back on your work and realise how right you were all along. That was the motivation you needed to keep going.

And often that motivation seemed to lead you into dangerous places. Caves, forests, mountains. This time it just so happened to be the rocky terrain of the Mojave.

Everyone in the surrounding states seemed to have felt the earth shake the day the explosion went off. The government had claimed it was military testing, but you didn't think so. After some calculations you managed to pin point the centre of the explosion. Following a quick search on google maps proved your theory right, whatever was in the area had been badly censored. There was something there and you were determined to get to the bottom of it.

No one had dared take you out into the desert with threats of radiation but you had to see this for yourself, radiation or not. However you had gotten your hands on a Geiger counter to be safe.

You were able to go some of the way on a quad bike but once the terrain became more mountainous you had to abandon the thing, following a gps and map towards your location, counter occasionally clicking in your hand, it was nothing more than background radiation.

You were beginning to lose hope, the heat becoming too much for you and despite the sun block you could feel your skin burning, even under your clothes. Maybe you could just head back and get better equipment, make a recovery and-

The Geiger counter picked up, clicking rapidly in your hand, the radioactivity increasing drastically, you were soon to find out why. Something only a few feet away darted from one rock to another. You supposed it wasn't that fast but your brain didn't focus on the thing fast enough to get a good look. The clicks had died down slightly, however once you moved they only started back up. Whatever had moved had been the source of emission.

"Uhm... hello?" you called, slowly approaching the rocky mass, and whatever was behind it.

"Hello!" a voice called back in a rather polite tone, you were surprised you had gotten a response, you wondered why this person was following you. Was it a fan? A fellow theorist? You weren't really sure how to respond.

"What are you doing out here?" you asked after a few moments of silence.

"I'm waiting... for some friends," he responded, although sounded somewhat unsure of himself. And who were these friends? All of this seemed awfully strange. Perhaps it was a plot to ambush you.

"Oh. Okay," you replied, leading into another awkward silence before you spoke again, "Would you like to come out? I won't harm you."

"I'm afraid that's not the issue. Humans tend to be... intimidated by me," you were a little disappointed at his words, but that had gotten your mind reeling. Perhaps this was an alien. Why else would he have used the wording he did. It would at least have to be something non human. You really had struck gold with this one.

"Well... I promise I won't be," you assured him, trying your best to hide the excitement in your tone, if he didn't come out you would surely end up invading his wishes anyway.

"Very well... so long as you shan't scream. For I may also scream," he stated, but didn't give you much time to promise that.

You really did have to bite back a scream, or rather, a shriek of joy as he (it?) climbed over the rock. It was what you could only describe as a mantis man, equipped with the pincers and all. Although it seemed he also had claw like hands. On top of that he had large insectoidal legs. Six of them in fact, again much like a mantis. He could probably easily gut you with one of those. Let alone six.

You had to remind yourself to be civil and not throw yourself at the thing, it didn't seem to like being treated differently, from how he had acted anyway. Besides. Getting any closer to it might be bad in the long run.

"You're very radioactive," was the first inoffensive thought to spring to mind, well, it was the lesser offensive at least.

"I'm aware," the creature nodded rather matter of factly, he didn't seem alarmed by this so either it was a totally normal thing or it was simply nothing to be concerned about.

"Does it have anything to do with the explosion? Was that you?" you asked, biting down on your tongue as if afraid to ask anymore questions for fear of being rude.

"Sort of. Where I live there was a breach in security, something worse than me.They had to detonate the warhead. Thankfully I remain unscathed, radioactive yet unscathed," he explained, "My friends, the researchers, hopefully managed to evacuate. I'm just waiting on them to collect me. They... well they haven't shown up yet..."

"They don't sound like very good friends," you could sense sadness and loss of hope in his tone. The poor thing had just been blown up because of 'something worse' which you would like to find but you figured you should take one thing at a time and help this little (big) guy out first.

"Yes... well..." he trailed off, glancing away from you before seeming to quickly change the subject, "You seem very red for a human."

You felt very red for a human. You would probably be aching for weeks because of the sunburn, "It's nothing, just a little sunburnt. Nothing some aftersun won't cure."

"You should probably not be out here, you can get second degree burns from the sun. Humans aren't really made for extended periods without shade. The best thing for you would be to return to civilisation," he explained, although you knew that much, it was probably a little too late for a warning.

"Well... you could come with me?" you suggested hopefully. You didn't want to give up on an opportunity like this. This was what you had worked your whole life to see and leaving now would be a crime.

"I... couldn't. I need to wait," he said glumly, although didn't sound too happy to have to be stuck out here much longer.

"Your friends sound a little bit shit. You shouldn't have to wait for them," you told him, and it was the truth. Real friends weren't supposed to abandon you during a nuclear detonation.

"Yes well... I wouldn't have anyone else otherwise," he muttered. And it almost broke your heart. How could someone not love a creature like this, as terrifying as he may be, he was sentient and more. He was an intelligent being that wasn't human. What more did they want?

"You have me," you encouraged, "I'll be your friend, (Y/N)'s the name. I would shake your hand but it might give me cancer."

And hopefully the creature looked up, you could have sworn he smiled, if it wasn't for the fact he was a giant mutant mantis.

"I don't have a name. Not yet anyway, I never really needed one," he explained, although you thought that just would not do. He needed a name, and a good one at that. Something with a lot of thought.

"Well if you're tagging along it'll be a while before we get anywhere... we also need to figure out how to smuggle you across the country but we can cross that bridge when we get to it. Therefore. We have a lot of time to do nothing but think about what name to give you!" you explained enthusiastically.

"I think I would like that," your new friend nodded.
