All you could remember was falling. It had be so cold. You couldn't feel your face, or your fingers, or your arms. Or anything for that matter. Everything hurt but it was all so numb at the same time. You couldn't breathe. Your lungs were gasping for air that simply wasn't coming.
That was all you could remember before darkness.
...
You had sincerely thought you had died, frozen to death or suffocated or drown. You couldn't quite remember why but you knew you hadn't been able to breathe.
Your whole body was shivering uncontrollably and you couldn't seem to open your eyes, had they been frozen shut? No, that was a stupid thought.
You felt... wet. Water had soaked into your clothes and dropped from your hair. Nearby you could hear the crackling of a fire and the heat from it was quickly bringing feeling back into your body. The ground was hard, like rocks. Over the sound of the flames you heard the slow flow of a river. You seemed to be outside. But you were so warm. It was winter.
When a little more feeling had returned to your limbs you managed to sit up, rubbing your eyes open as you listened to the fire pop slightly, as if in protest. Once your vision had returned you came to a realisation that the flames did in fact respond to your moving. Your gaze had come to rest on a humanoid figure. A male humanoid figure. Made completely out of fire.
You let out a quiet yelp and backed up slightly. The fire popped again in surprise, the flames on his body brightening slightly at the sudden movement.
The fire maintained his distance, watching you silently as you only stared back. When you saw that he wasn't hostile you relaxed slightly, at this point not entirely sure what was happening. Were you dreaming.
You pinched yourself.
"Ouch," you hissed.
You weren't dreaming.
The fire now watched you with a tilted head and an outstretched arm. You couldn't see any eyes but it seemed he was looking down at your wrist that was now bruising from the sharp pinch.
"Am I hallucinating then," you questioned aloud, now reaching out to touch the fire's hand, feeling the increasing heat, almost becoming hot enough to burn before he quickly withdrew from you, holding his hand to near his chest.
You could feel it. You weren't hallucinating either.
Your mind recalled a forest fire that had happened a few weeks ago. It had been strange occurring in winter.
"Did you... cause the big fire?" you questioned. You weren't even sure if it could talk, or if it was intelligent enough to understand you.
But it nodded anyway.
"Was it on purpose?" you were trying to work out if this... thing was safe to be around or not.
It nodded again.
"Why?" it didn't seem like it was able to speak. It was fire. Why should fire be able to speak.
But it did.
It wasn't a humans voice. It was raspy and uneven in the tones. You had never heard anything like it in your life.
"Fuel."
You blinked slightly before continuing.
"Why did you stop?"
"Water."
Mass amounts of water had been brought in by helicopters. It could only have been referring to mass water drops. It wanted fuel. It wanted its food. But it couldn't have too much otherwise the helicopters would be sent in to extinguish it. But why hadn't it killed you? Surely you were a small amount of fuel? Why was it still here? Why was it trying to warm you up?
You rapid fired these questioned at the fire and he didn't seem able to keep up, crackling and popping after each question.
"Save," it responded,"Water, cold. Bad. Not fuel."
You frowned slightly. Did it want to kill you. Was it just waiting until you were warmer and dryer to consume you. To burn you alive. Maybe drowning would have been better.
"You want-"
"Not fuel," he was pointing at you now, shaking his head.
You only watched as he moved closer, feeling the warmth wash over you. By now you had stopped shivering and only held your damp clothes tightly around your body.
Then you felt the flames envelop you, panic briefly setting in. But when they didn't burn you you frowned. Looking up at what you presumed was the face of this fire. He crackled slightly.
It felt very much like a warm blanket. Despite the cold of the forest you were warm. You shifted into his embrace, humming happily. You still weren't sure how you had got here in the first place but you were saved. And that's all that mattered.
"Thank you."
