It was late.
The sun had set hours ago and the temperature dropped as it shifted into the early hours of the morning. The cold bit at your skin and chilled you right to the bone, almost to the point of pain. Desperately you pulled the dark jacket around you, marked with the three letters of FBI. You used to be proud to wear those letters, but after being kicked off to the Unusual Incidents Unit another three recurring letters seemed far more interesting. You liked to believe you belonged there, instead of the UIU. You liked to believe you were worthy of actually investigating, not standing out in the cold at three am, waiting on your idols to show up.
Of course you didn't complain when Kondraki finally showed up, sauntering over to you and the few other members of your small task force, who decided to turn up.
"I better have a good reason for being called out here at this time of night," he muttered, feigning a yawn. You knew all to well that he was wide awake, especially as he had been called out at this time.
"There was movement inside, second floor from the top, maybe. Couple of teens or something got past us a few hours ago. One of ours, Artie Jefferson, went in to check it out, tell them to leave. He didn't come out. Five of your guys showed up, MTF, I think. Went in about twenty minutes ago, haven't heard a word since," one of your team mates responded, you didn't really know his name. This building was rarely your job, although you had been personally requested by the Skippers to show up at this one, not until after the night shift team had already fucked up. It didn't surprise you Kondraki was here either. He was a regular face at the places you were called out to, from what you knew of the man he certainly knew how to climb ranks. Having been a Skipper for a couple of years, already having himself a reputation for dealing with the unusual stuff, or SCP's as you had heard him call them. It made sense as most, of not all of the time that group showed up with a name, always having initials of those letters. Those three letters that you had grown to respect so much.
"We were told not to go in, keep the perimeter secure and make sure no one enters, nothing leaves without passing by with us first," another added.
The doctor grunted slightly, his fingers drumming over the top of his camera, a common habit of his when he was thinking.
After a solid five minutes of silence he exhaled a visible puff of air and raised the camera to view the building only to lower it seconds later, after a few clicks from the device.
"You haven't done a very good job at keeping the area secure," he muttered at last,"I'll go in, see what I can find. If you don't hear from me in say... thirty minutes presume I'm dead or something equally as horrible."
At that he started towards the building, leaving your group behind in a confused silence. After a short time of this you decided that you had had quite enough of standing around and hurried off after Kondraki, hoping to prove your worth to both him and his organisation.
"Thought I told you to stay?" he didn't turn back at the sound of your hurried footsteps to catch up to him.
"I'm not a dog and I don't want to freeze either," you hissed quietly, not wanting to offend a superior.
Kondraki either didn't hear or didn't care, but allowed you to tag along all the same.
The hotel grounds were small, consisting of nothing but a small car park and a few decorative flower beds near the front.
Something seemed off, and you couldn't quite put your finger on what it was. Until you passed the flowerbeds, the seven story hotel close enough to touch at this point. Now an overwhelming fear washed over you causing you to stop abruptly in your tracks.
Kondraki slowed to a stop, looking around him before walking back between the flowerbeds, then forward again.
"This wasn't on the report," he muttered to himself, seeming to forget you were there. However you managed to compose yourself. Kondraki wasn't scared, so you shouldn't have to be either.
"What wasn't?" you spoke at last, suppressing the fear in your tone.
"It has psychic effects," at your confused look he was forced to continue,"It'll fuck with your brain, so be careful."
You still weren't quite sure what that entailed but nodded anyway, watching as Kondraki stepped inside the rotating door pushing his way inside, you quickly followed suit. Despite being old the door moved with ease and you were soon on the interior of the building.
"The movement was on the sixth floor, my bet's that's where the others will be, dead or alive," he added, again glancing around him.
You nodded silently, allowing him to lead the way, he was of course more experienced.
After a couple of flights of stairs things really started to feel wrong, and Kondraki was showing this too, growing increasingly paranoid by the looks of it. You weren't quite sure what you were feeling yet.
You decided to take it upon yourself to ease the mood, being this tense couldn't be good, and it was the building that was messing both of you up anyway.
"Y'know I shouldn't even be out here," you stated as calmly as you could,"I just always seem to be called out to things when you are. It's kinda funny."
He glanced back at you with a frown on his face before replying,"I request you personally from time to time."
Now it was your turn to frown, "Why?"
Kondraki gave a short, amused chuckle,"I quite like you, and you're good at your job, which is a bonus."
"Oh..." you felt your face grow red, it wasn't common for a superior to tell you that, let alone a Skipper. No one had ever complimented you on your job either, everyone else thought you were bat shit crazy.
"Thanks, I think," you replied sheepishly.
"You're welcome," he cast a weary grin in your direction before continuing on.
It didn't take you long to get to the sixth floor, and climbing five sets of stairs didn't tire you at all, you assumed it was adrenaline.
"Alright, keep an eye out for anything unusual," he ordered, gaining another silent nod from you.
You started down the hallway. Immediately the paranoia hit, you felt like something was coming, something bad. But again you pushed that down, Kondraki still seemed composed too. So it couldn't be that bad.
"Shouldn't we check in some of the rooms?" you questioned, barely managing to get your voice to work.
By now you had passed a couple of doors, perhaps they missing people were in there, then you could get out of here.
"It says do not disturb," Kondraki pointed at the little hangar around the handle of the door, turned to do not disturb. You felt stupid, why would you go in there anyway. You pursed your lips and continued on, trying to ignore the fact that you had been so idiotic.
Instead you ended up focusing on the doors, quickly noticing names were engraved on plaques instead of having numbers. The fact didn't really register in your mind, it seemed normal to you. Until you came across one reading 'Arthur Patrick Jefferson'. You stopped, the name seeming familiar to you before you were suddenly pulled along by Kondraki, who was now half running with you dragging behind him by the arm.
"We have to keep going," he muttered, glancing behind him nervously.
"What?" you frowned, trying to follow his gaze.
"I can hear them on the stairs, we'll be safe in one of the rooms, just hurry up."
And that's when it clicked. Jefferson was one of the UIU positioned here. Artie Jefferson, one of the others outside had called him. Eight doors. You had passed eight doors with names on them. One for Arthur, four for the trespassers. One for a Skipper. Upon being pulled around corner you found another set of six doors. Four more closed shut and although you couldn't see from your position, you knew the doors must have plaques on them. Two others near the end were open, emitting a soft glow from each room.
Kondraki said he could hear them on the stairs. You weren't sure who they were but the only thing you could hear was your and the Skippers movements.
So you stopped, getting a grip on Kondraki's arm and stopping him too.
"What the hell-"
You cut him off quickly,"Don't go into those rooms."
"Well, we have no where else to go," he hissed back,"They're on the stairs and we can't get around them."
"Who? Who the hell is on the stairs because I can't hear them," this caused Kondraki to go silent, looking at you with an expression of urgency and worry.
"That's what it wants us to think. It's messing with us, like you said!" you explained,"The rooms have the names of the people who went in tonight. It's an abandoned hotel. Why not go into the room? It just doesn't want is in there. I don't know what it did to them or what it wants. I just know we have to leave, and now. You have to trust me."
The man blinked a few times, seeming to rid himself of the manipulation of the building before nodding.
"I still feel like something's coming. But you're making more sense that this damned place," he grumbled before you began pulling him away.
Rushing down the corridor and down the stairs, your grip on his arm tightening the further back you went. Because now you could feel it too, like something was waiting to get you on the stairs. Kondraki hesitated - never protesting - multiple times, but your grip on him kept pulling him forward, not daring to let go should he end up running back to the open rooms.
It wasn't until you back outside, past the flowerbeds did you finally let go, now panting heavily but just glad to be out. Now did you look back at the flowerbeds.
"The flowers!" you explained, half laughing through breaths.
Kondraki looked over to you, frowning once more.
"Look! I knew something was wrong, there's no weeds no dead flowers. It's well kept," you explained through silent laughter.
Perhaps you were delirious, perhaps just relieved. But you knew it really wasn't funny, nor relevant.
"Sure thing, kid, sure thing," he chuckled at your display, placing a hand on your shoulder, which quickly calmed your fits of laughter.
"You know, you saved me back there," he added seriously after a while.
"Huh? Well I wouldn't call it 'saved'. I just helped you out," you muttered, your face flushing again.
"Either way, I wouldn't have made it out without you. Glad you came with," his hand tightened around your shoulder in an affectionate gesture.
"So uh... now what?" you questioned, trying to alleviate that awkward feeling. It wasn't that you didn't like the affection. You weren't sure how to deal with it.
"Call another MTF in, secure the area," he shrugged a little with a sideways glance towards you,"I would probably need a research assistant who, let's say, has first hand experience with this place."
You perked up at this, quickly turning to face him,"Wait..."
"I'm not even sure where I'll find one of those, I'll have to do it alone," he sighed in mock dismay.
"If you're really so desperate, I suppose I could make room in my busy schedule," you muttered coolly, hiding away your excitement.
"Well then, a couple of our guys will check you out, just to make sure you're not a spy or something stupid like that, but I may as well welcome you to the Special Containment Procedures Foundation right about now," he grinned at you, and you returned it right back.
"That's what it stands for," you muttered quietly, turning up stare up at the building, vowing in your head to beat this thing.
When you looked back at Kondraki again he had started back to the security post.
"You coming?" he called back and you nodded, jogging to catch up to him.
Once by his side you grinned playfully,"What do you mean by 'quite like'?"
His eyes rested on you briefly before returning forward,"You're a researcher now. You have to work things out yourself."
