~Third Person Thorin POV~
The company had stopped for the night, making camp in a small clearing, the forest in front of them, and a stone wall behind them. Thorin was watching everyone set up. Bofur and Bombur were serving up dinner, and everyone was in line to get some. Except, he noticed, the Hobbit. He was sitting off to the side, his nose, buried in a book.
Thorin shook his head, and when he got his food, grabbed one for Bilbo as well. Sitting down next to the Halfling, he expected to get some acknowledgement of his presence, but was confused when he got none.
"Bilbo." That made the burglar look up.
"Oh, Thorin! I'm sorry, I didn't see you there!" he apologised with a small smile, making the Dwarf's insides tingly.
He thrust the bowl in his face, not meeting the Hobbit's eyes.
"Oh! Thank you! I would have forgotten all about food. Thank you again, Thorin." That made Thorin blush, and he looked the other way.
"Think nothing of it." The two fell into silence, eating their food quietly.
Thorin noticed Bilbo had already mostly finished within five minutes, and was reading his book again. Finishing his food, Thorin sat down his bowl, and stared at the Hobbit, drinking in his features. He had curly, brown hair, and even though it had been recently cut, was growing out again. His eyes were a blueish green color that reminded Thorin of a sunset. His skin was a fair tan color, and his smile made Thorin's stomach flutter.
He shook his head. Where the hell were these feelings coming from? He had only meet Bilbo a couple of days ago, there was no reason he should be feel this protective, this- He stopped. There was one reason.
No, that was impossible. Shoving the thoughts aside, he leaned closer to the Hobbit's book.
"What are you reading?" Bilbo looked up.
"Oh, um, The Adventures of Faramir Graydire, it's one of my favourites. I've read it about 100 times by now." he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck, blushing slightly. Oh man, he was cute when he blushed.
Thorin coughed as he blushed slightly, the thought catching him off guard. He put the book away, and turned to Thorin.
"What about you?"
"What about me?" The Hobbit gave a huffy laugh.
"What's your favourite book?" he asked again, sitting a little closer.
"Oh," He blushed slightly, feeling like an idiot, "It was a story my Amad used to tell me. It was about a man and a Dwarf that became the most unlikely of friends and saved the world from and evil power." It sounded stupid now that he said it out loud. Bilbo chuckled.
"Sounds kind of like what we're doing now, huh?" he questioned, chuckling.Thorin, nodded, looking at the rest of the company to distract himself.
"Oi! Bilbo!" The pair looked up at the sound of Kili's voice. He was standing over by Bilbo's bag, holding something in his hand.
"Who's this? Are you courting her?"
Bilbo's face scrunched up at the question, and Thorin's heart dropped. The other crowded around the picture, hooting and whistling.
"I didn't know you had a girl back home," Fili said, snatching the paper from his brother, tilting it sideways. Bilbo's face flushed, and he stomped over quickly, grabbing the paper from his Ingadan.
"I don't." the Hobbit grumbled sitting back down in his previous spot.
Thorin leaned over, and caught a glimpse of a picture. It was two Hobbits, Bilbo-obviously- on the left, and a cute Hobbit lass on the right.
"Did it not work out?" Ori asked, tilting his head. It was an innocent question, but it seemed to take a toll on Bilbo.
"I guess you could say that."
"What happened?" Bofur asked, sitting on the other side of the Hobbit. Bilbo sighed.
"She died." That shut everyone up quickly.
A few shared some glanced with each other, and Thorin felt slight pity for the burglar.
"Well, I mean, she went missing a while ago, and everyone just assumed she died after a little bit, and stopped looking." His voice was barely above a whisper at that point.
"I'm sorry..." Ori apologised.
"Oh, Ori, it's alright. You didn't know."
Bilbo gave a small smile. He put the picture away in his coat.
"She was and all nice, and was cute, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I mean, I don't really care what they look like, because when you meet someone that is for you, you'll know it." He stood, brushing off his butt.
"Now, you two..." Thorin watched as the Hobbit chased his nephews around their small camp, ranting about how they shouldn't go through people's things, and yelling out quite a few curse words, the two twins laughing.
So the King Under the Mountain was left to stand there taking in the strange sight before him. He did raise a brow at what the hobbit had said to him.
"Hm," Perhaps he had misjudged their burglar.
There was some Khuzdul in this chapter. Amad means mother, and Ingadan means near-son. Just some help from you friendly hell-spawn fiend!
