[The streets - Evergreen village]

I'm currently covering my face from embarrassment after telling Tay-ki, my best friend, about what happened yesterday. We were passing through the markets to get home after a full day of just hanging out. I count these last few days that I have before the festival. It's said that more than usual are taking part.

The markets aren't as full as they normally are so the people are throwing me weird looks again. Guess the news spread fast about the 'human boy flirting with the chief's daughter'. Tay-ki can't keep a straight face as he continues to laugh at my misfortune. Sigh. Why did it have to be me?

Tay-ki was the guy that everyone liked. He was obedient, well mannered and always does his chores in the city. They say that he is a cut above the rest in our generation. If only they knew him as well as I did. He even knows how to use magic better than me. But then again, one of the books I read said that humans have no magic affinity, so it's even a miracle that I can.

"What happened after you got home?" He managed to ask me through his laughing.

"Like I would give you more reason to laugh again," I mutter, barely audible.

"What was that?"

"I said I'm not telling."

"Okay, I think I laughed enough," he chuckled again. How are we friends again?

The truth is, when I got home, I was shouted at AGAIN. Ma gave a whole speech about stealing and I was left feeling bad. Sadly, I couldn't keep the book. I hid the book from Ma when I gave it to Toya. She can't find out that I use magic. The guardians let it go as a warning and if I get caught again, they'll throw me in jail. That's only if they catch me... haha.

Tay-ki was looking at me with green eyes that paired weirdly well with his orange fur. He and his brother are the only lycras in the village that have orange fur. He is giving me his signature dopey grin again. He has a really stupid idea.

"No," I answer.

"I didn't even say anything."

"That smile says it all."

His smile immediately fades away. Phew. If he stuck to an idea I would have been in serious trouble. I may get into trouble on my own but when I'm with him and his plans, trouble comes to us almost as natural as breathing. The bad part is he never gets in trouble. It's always me! I learnt the hard ways to avoid those ideas, especially to stay away from Ma's bad side.

We are currently on the way to my house but I first need to drop him off at his house. He lives two streets away from me with his brother. I live with my mom and sister. Ma invites Tay-ki to eat with us on weekends when his brother is working late. Apparently she trusts him more than me because she keeps telling him to make sure I don't get into trouble.

I dropped him off at his house and waved him off. The sun was beginning to set. It's almost time for dinner.

While I was walking home I found myself fiddling with the necklace around my neck. Ma told me this is the last thing my real mother left me before she died. It's a string with red diamond shape gem on it. Ma told me that it's enchanted so I can't take it off.

I'm walking down the street to my house. The streetlights are starting to glow signalling that its almost night. The gems in the streetlights glow a bright white light the darker it gets. The streets are quiet because everyone is preparing for the festival. I have to take part this year.

I'm finally home. The door is unlocked. I know what you're thinking but don't worry, they're hasn't been anyone daring enough to test out the wrath of my mother. There probably won't ever be anyone.

I walk past the living room to go into the kitchen. Ma's still dishing up. The smell of meat is making my whole body feel tingly. I haven't eaten all day. I was too busy trying to understand the new book I got.

It explained how to combine elemental attacks such Fire and Wind or Water and Earth. To my luck the book focuses on how to combine fire and wind. I first need to learn how to use air magic.

"Hey, Ma," I say sitting down," Something smells good."

"Hello, Haki. The meat you're smelling is from the river rabbits your sister got on her hunt," she said while dishing up. I sit straight up, looking around, but I don't see her.

"She only came to drop off this and then went back to her hunting party," she said, answering my question I had in my head.

My sister, Mikasa, was part of a hunting party called the Night Crawlers. They were the ten most elite at hunting, tracking and closed combat in the whole village. The people in the group were different ages but my sister was the youngest to join a year ago. She's currently fifteen.

After Ma finished dishing up she sat down and then we prayed for Mother Earth to bless the food. It was rabbit meat and a vegetable stew. It was delicious! A great way to take all the unwanted tension in your out. Ma didn't say a word while we were eating. I noticed but pretended like I didn't. She probably has something on her mind that wants to tell me.

After finishing my plate and gulping down a full cup of plum juice I looked at my mother.

"Ma, what's wrong?" I say sounding concerned.

"Why are you learning magic?" She asked in a serious tone.

I started coughing on nothing. How did she find out?!

"Uhmmmm..." I'm trying to come up with a really good lie.

Ma doesn't like the fact that I'm learning magic. She wants me to take up a 'normal job' like becoming a merchant or a carpenter, but that isn't what I want to do with my life. I want to go on an adventure, discover the world and fight demons. That is a life full of happiness that I want to have one day. This means that I have to be straight about it.

"I-I want to become an adventurer!" I say proudly(my eyes were closed when I said it).

My mother stayed quiet for a moment. She looked deeply into my black eyes. I don't shy away to show that I'm serious. Her red eyes went well her crimson hair. She looked like she was trying to find something in my eyes. After a few moments she let out a sigh and look towards the window. Two moons was showing off in the distance giving the signature white light. Then she looked back at me.

"I've decided," she said.

"Decided what?" I ask curiously.

"That I'll teach you magic."
