Chapter one

I received no reply to any of my questions and was left to ponder the meaning of the conversation that l just had with the voice inside my head. It seemed to be very much real and it was remarkable that l was left in one piece. Normally, conversations with voices normally ended with me in some other world or asking about pieces of information which l never got. My eyes teared up again as l thought of the little girl. I was determined to find her and ask her exactly what happened provided she was still alive. However, for now l had to deal with my current situation. I felt even more confused than l was originally before the conversation and l am not exactly sure how l am supposed to start my new life.

I focused my attention back onto the darkness that seemed completely different from before. It used to give off an air of nothingness and emptiness but now it seemed almost friendly? Friendly and comfortable to be in. Feeling very apprehensive and anxious, l scanned the area in front of me to try and see whether anyone was controlling the darkness. There was still no one there. Suddenly, a pillar of light pierced through the darkness, blinding me completely as l could not close my eyes for protection. The light invaded the darkness extremely fast and the darkness disappeared as if trying to escape. I tried to move and this time instead of standing still, l felt myself getting smaller and smaller until l was almost half the size l used to be.

I wiggled my fingers in a vain attempt to regain some control of my body but the moment my first finger moved, a bone shattering pain flashed through my body rendering me immobile as l collapsed onto the light covered floor. I started convulsing violently as l felt my bones breaking and muscles shifting. Each break, each tear could be felt by me. The pain intensified with each change my body made. At first, due to surprise, l let out screams of agony in response to the painful sensations. But as time flew by and my pain tolerance heightened, l let out soft whimpers of distress. Through the whole experience, l never stopped shaking as l lost the security of the darkness.

I lay there weakly, vulnerable and alone with no one to comfort me. No one to hold my hand and reassure me and give me hope. At that moment, l was given a reminder that stayed with me for the rest of my life. 'No matter where you are. No matter who you are. No matter who your family is. You will always be alone in the end. Always remember that you will be alone.'

This reminder might seem rather depressing at first but it helped me in this painful situation to always retain my best memories in the depths of my heart because then they will be remembered in moments such as these.

I lay on the ground for what seemed like hours before l cautiously tried to move my body again afraid of the pain. I first moved my eyes and let out a pained moan in response to the soreness. It seemed like l could see just fine although l could only see whiteness around me. I tried moving one leg and found my legs to be extremely short. I tried to bend my back so l could see what legs looked like but then l couldn't. My mind was racing with thoughts like 'What have l become?' 'What happened?'. But nothing popped up in my mind as to what could have happened. Logically, me being this small could mean one of two things. Either l am a baby or l am an animal but l am more inclined to think the former.

Preoccupied with discovering what was new about my body, I hardly noticed the light receding or the new surroundings about me. I was still amazed at how a full-grown girl could turn back into a baby. Was this so-called black magic? I had no idea. Lately, it seemed to me that l was always in a state of confusion as nothing was ever fully explained. While trying to take a glimpse at my arm, l realised that the scenery had changed again and l was no longer in the space of both light and darkness. I looked up at the sky and its blue colour brought relief to me. I was finally back in a world. I did not know which one but l was back in the land of living.

Still looking at the sky, I noticed the grey clouds that flitted past and knew that it was going to rain, What a pain! I was in a new world but l would die so quickly due to hypothermia or even a cold if l was a baby. I turned my small head carefully so l could look at where exactly l was. And the horror of the place lulled me into a shock induced sleep.
