Chapter 16 mature

Recap: I was not paying attention to the elder in front of me, who was getting frantic as there was no reaction when the blood mixed. This meant that the chief now had his first son. In his mind, he was doomed! 'We already have one uncooperative chief. I really hoped that he would not have a son and that l would succeed him as chief! Seems that my plans need to be altered.' With a shaky hand, he raised the bowl up in the air and announced. "THE CHIEF HAS A NEW SON!"

Third person P.O.V

All the villagers were extremely startled. 'A new son? You mean his only son, right?' Now things had come to this, they looked at Mira with complicated looks. With this son, all their statuses were going to rise extremely high and each villager was sure that they would face revenge from the sisters due to their mistreatment and all the vulgar repulsive comments they received. Many were extremely unwilling to let it end like this but what else could they do? It's not like they could claim the baby was theirs nor could they kill the heir to the chiefdom now that he had been recognised by the elders.

Many of the elders also started making their own plans. They knew that Edena was now part of the chief's harem so they could not touch her. But now, her two sisters are high ranking nobles because of their blood connection to the little prince which meant they were very valuable to the chiefs. Some had even started getting ready to propose marriages and alliances with the sisters in order to cement their power in the new hierarchy. If the elders could think of these plans, Mira could already guess how much her status had changed and was truly very scared at the thought of being married off due to status. She knew that any marriages she entered would bring her misfortune and suffering. Just because her little nephew raised her status, doesn't mean that people had changed their attitudes. Instead, now on the surface, they would be very courteous while cursing her and her family in their hearts. Mira herself also silently made her plans while looking after the slightly injured baby.

"What if they knew that the baby was –". But her thoughts were interrupted by another elder: "Mira, since the identity of this child has been uncovered, why not just move your entire household to the chief's. Whether a marriage happens or not, this is his first and most precious child. We don't want him to be tainted or influenced in anyway. Tomorrow, we shall petition the chief to hand over the child to his first, legal wife." Mira was utterly enraged: "You cannot do that! This is my sister's child, her own flesh and blood! She took care of him for over a year and the maternal bond was already created. You can't just separate mother and child based on withering traditions" The elder just smiled viciously in response: "So what? Customs must be followed. It doesn't matter if they're ancient or not. Besides, who are you to talk and challenge them? You're neither the mother nor the chief of the tribe which means you are completely unrelated to this matter! I suggest you go back and settle into your new status well instead of challenging your elders! Such an unfilial child! Your parents must be tossing around in their graves at the sight of you."

"You!" Mira felt so insulted that she almost fought with the elder but she caught herself in the last second. Chanting: "Amitabha Buddha" in her heart gradually calmed her down as she thought of different ways to turn the scenario around. Even after a few minutes, she could not come up with any good plan and the elders had already moved on to other pressing matters that needed to be discussed. She went back to sit down with the baby and stared at the elders in silence. She realised calmly that there was hardly anything she could do with the elders at this moment. It was even a miracle that they relented so easily considering that they were truly planning on killing her family.

She looked at her family's saviour, the little Orion and felt relieved that for once that Edena broke customs to have this baby. Imagining what would have happened had they not had Orion made Mira's face pale due to fear. Really, sometimes she wished she was a man instead of woman. Still, she placed all her hopes on Orion and concentrated on the boring assembly.

The chief didn't say anything more and just watched the elders discussing matters of the village while he fantasised about having the woman he loved as his slave. He was so happy that the rest of the assembly passed back like a flash. After the assembly finished, he signalled some of his warrior guards to bring the entire family over. He also forced Mira to give the baby over before sending them on their way. Slowly he walked back to his residence while looking at the baby in his arms. Honestly, he was slightly relieved that he now had a 'successor'. He'd let the boy have the position until he had his own sons. Then after that, who knows? He grinned as he plotted for the future. He couldn't wait for his new slave and her child to be at his beck and call.

Author's note: I honestly can't believe its been a year already since l last updated. I lost inspiration for a while with this book because l had such grand ideas that l didn't actually plan through. Anywho, please enjoy the chapter, like and comment! I'd really appreciate it 🙈
