Chapter 15 non-mature

Recap: "No need to think so much you know. I have decided on Orion! I think its quite a fitting name. We won't discuss this again because l know how you guys like fighting and not agreeing with each other on the smallest of things." Mira pouted but acquiesced. Freya nodded and then became distracted easily as something caught her eye. "Let's go back to the hut sisters and prepare for what is to come tomorrow. It is dawning and we can use the excuse of preparing the wedding to miss the assembly tonight." And so...we went into the hut blissfully ignorant of what was going to happen in the assembly.

We reached our hut fairly quickly and l set the baby down on one of the mats and started organising the few things we had left in the house. There wasn't much food in the hut but l took out all the meat and bread we had and had Mira cook it fragrantly. I also took out all the cooking herbs l had saved and made sure this last meal would be a meal to remember. However, l made sure to leave some bread left for the next morning where we would begin our move to the chief's huts.

Although l had brought out all the meat in the hut, my mind quickly wandered to the extra stored meat under the hut which has been dried and preserved with herbs and cold water. If anything happened, at least there would be some food left for us to live on. Mira was in charge of all the meat and Freya in charge of the herb dressings which would be roasted along with the bread on the fire. This would make the bread taste something other than bland. I know it is extremely dangerous to feed a one year old baby solid foods but there's hardly anything l can do. Wait! "Freya! Leave one of the bread pieces out. Don't roast it. Mira, make more sauce with the limited water we have. It's for the baby." They all continued working as if they had not heard me but l could see the subtle changes they were making to their cooking processes. For example, Mira put in less herbs and Freya reduced the sizes of the bread.

After watching them cook for a few minutes, l brought my attention back to the baby. My little saviour. I picked him up and turned myself around so he could see his aunts cooking. I whispered into his tiny little ear: "Look Orion, those are your aunts. Busying cooking for you and me." Orion looked at me and wiggled his fingers in my face before turning back to my sisters.

Jane's P.O.V

Can l just say it has been a whirlwind of a day! And a lot of things really did happen in one day. I appeared in a random place. Edena, my 'mother' picked me up and brought me back to the village. Her sisters then found out about me and we were utterly terrified at first before accepting me. Though l have to say that even l was scared when l got buried in all that soil. They were really taking a gamble with my life there! Luckily, l survived. Then the whole affair of the rest of the village finding out about me. Now my 'mother' is getting married to some guy who is the chief of this place. Through all of that, l cannot deny that l was feeling extremely scared and thought l was going to die many, many times. I am grateful for my life and for my new 'family'.

Oh look! I saw my 'mother' gesturing at her sisters and l also looked at them missing what she said in the process. If l had one word to describe the whole family, l would say they were not beauties but still each had unique traits that would make you turn your head in amazement. But then again, in this century, all that mattered was that you could have babies.

I looked back at my mother and pictured her in purple. The marriage colour. I puzzled l tried to think about how l even knew that. I was only here for a day but already adapted to their cultures and knew about them already?! How is that possible? Isn't the marriage colour supposed to be red? Or even white? I thought about this for a second before closing that line of thought quickly. 'I don't want to discover things to early and land myself in hot water.'

Pleasant smells wafted from where Mira and Freya were standing that l just had to look back there again. 'I'm hungry...' I pulled at my mother's rags and she paid attention to me again. I cried a little loudly. This was the only way to tell her whether l was hungry or felt like going to the grass. (to pee). She smiled gently then urged her sisters to cook faster.

That night was a great night for the Rowwe family, who had a small feast in honour of Edena getting married. While other people were celebrating, others were plotting. 'Chief! Your wives have found out about the marriage and are plotting again." The chief slammed his hands on the table: "Damn it!"
