I have been speechless multiple times in my life but l have to say that today has really eclipsed every other day. Even though I had just slept on that woman's bosom, l was still extremely tired and l fought to keep my eyes. Unfortunately, l did not quite understand what this woman was rambling about in her fit of sadness and nostalgia. Something about protecting family in exchange of becoming part of one. I am not exactly sure that l should help. My mission from the voice was to be in control of something. It really has nothing to do with family and l know it may be mean of me to say this but sometimes family may drag you down and emotional ties may prevent you from reaching your goal. That is really reality.
Anyways...l almost got sucked back into that deep black hole called...cynicism. Back to the problem at hand, I may be able to help the woman protect her family in exchange for her raising me. That seems like a fair price. But before l agree to anything, l have to look at the situation. I'm not going to just jump in impulsively like before in those other worlds without a plan. Either that leads to disaster or me attracting attention. I would prefer neither of those things so until...*yawn*...until l see the village later...*yawn* I won't be...*falls asleep*.
Third person p.o.v
The baby fell asleep again after deep contemplation and when the woman finally broke out of her stupor, she noticed this. Picking the baby up gently, she lay down on the bed before putting the baby back near her bosom. Trying not to suffocate it, she wrapped her arms around it in a protective manner. She did this to hide the baby from sight so if her sisters woke up, they would not be alarmed. Worst-case scenario, she would have to tell them the truth but she was not all that sure that they would keep the secret. The picture of the dashing young man slipped into her mind again before she fell into a dreamless sleep.
Meanwhile...in another area of the village, the main hunters were in a secret area, kind of like a cave, having a meeting and plotting the destruction of some of the poorer families which were part of the tribe. One of the older hunters started off by saying: "We must get rid of all these families right now. Lately, there has been a decrease in the number of animals that traverse around this area because they know that they will meet us and die a horrible death. Currently, there is not an animal in sight. This means that we now have to travel for longer and further distances just to be able to get food for the next day! We cannot keep supporting these weak links therefore we must get rid of them right now!" A middle-aged man stood up in response to this shocking statement: "NO! We cannot get rid of the poorer families. Most of them are the healers that heal us when we are injured or on the brink of death. If we get rid of them right now, the death rate will increase!"
Several men now stood up: "But if we can teach the boys to heal themselves then there will be no need for the healers." "NO! Majority of the healer families are women. If we get rid of them, then there will be no one to carry the future generation of this village! We must keep the healers. Besides, only women can be healers. Remember last time we tried to teach boys how to heal-"
A grandpa then stood up and the whole room descended into silence: "We must not speak of that incident anymore. We lost many potential hunters because of that experiment and even l oppose removing all healer families. *cue murmurs* However! I do agree that we can cut off the weakest links of the village! Starting with those villainous traitors that live near the gate." Choruses of "Yes!" "You are right!" and "Traitors!" reverberated in the room. "We all know how those people betrayed us and I think that punishment of all death to all males in the family was not enough! Who agrees with me?" Roars bounced off the walls: We ALL do!"
"Good, good. All that is left now is to draft the proposal and give it to the chief. I am sure he will also agree!" The men in the room all nodded their heads in agreement. This whole affair would remain secret until they decided to reveal their plans to the rest of the villagers. Besides, who needs healers anyway? People will always die in the end.
The men then dispersed quietly as if there had never been a meeting and each walked back to their respective hut. If you noticed, every single hut they walked back into were all closer to the chief's house showing they were all high officials. One of the shorter men waited until everyone else was gone before slinking back into the main area of the village. Walking stealthily, he entered the chief's hut to report the meetings findings to him. Quietly, he spoke "They are planning on removing her again chief. They will give the excuse that she is a weak link and does not give much contribution to the village. Furthermore, she has been taking more trips outside of late and this has been making villagers suspicious. If you want to protect her, l suggest..." but he was interrupted by a deep masculine voice. "There is no need to tell me what to do. I will decide myself. Go and spy on them for longer. Make sure to be at the audience tomorrow when they announce this to the villagers."
This mysterious man, who was the chief thought, 'Just what have you gotten yourself into this time, you troublesome woman?'
Author's note:
I suggest that you pay special attention to the meeting because it is pretty important and will be referred to a lot in the future chapters :)
