Chapter 11 – non-mature
Recap: The two looked at each other nervously so l asked the question again: "WHERE IS THE BABY?" Mira replied in a small voice: "We buried it." I paused before processing those words. "YOU DID WHAT?"
I tried to calm myself down in case l scared my sisters. "Why did you do that?" Freya shuffled around for a bit as Mira did not dare to make eye contact before saying in an extremely small voice that l almost failed to hear: "We just didn't want the baby to ruin our family." Mira sharply added while looking at the ground still: "Don't think that we don't know the consequences of having an illegitimate baby. We could all be killed." Freya desperately tugged at my rags: "Why do you think that our lives should be sacrificed for a little child such as this! I know it is selfish but l want to live just like everyone else even though we are currently in poverty."
Mira nodded in agreement. I looked at them and laughed scornfully: "Looking at our own situation right now, we can hardly live through the winter. Also, thatbaby is mychild! Why would l not want to sacrifice my life for it as a mother and parent?" Luckily while l said all of these, my fingers were crossed behind my back. Honestly speaking, l did not want to die for a baby l hardly knew but l had a feeling that keeping this baby would definitely be worth it. "We just don't want to die! Besides, don't you think that as a sister, you should have more of a duty to us than a child hardly one day old. Besides, we got rid of it anyway so there's no more threat to our lives anymore."
My eyes curved dangerously as l looked at these two malicious girls that l used to call sister: "YOU NAÏVE STUPID GIRLS! Do you think that getting rid of the baby will save our lives! You must be the dumbest on earth. IF you haven't noticed, the villagers want us dead regardless so with or without the baby, we shall still die! Besides, the baby was supposed to be our saving grace! UGH!" I pushed them out of my way and rushed out to the clearing behind the hut. I searched around the ground for soft soil and noticed a small mound after a while. I furiously dug at the soil not caring about it dirtying my rags or getting soil in my nails. This method did not work very well and instead made me look like a mad woman.
People were looking in my direction curiously while others were pointing and chuckling saying things like 'Look at where they are now! They used to be powerful but now they are eating soil!' My heart clenched as hate swirled in my veins. I clenched my teeth to restrain myself and continued digging hurriedly. Minutes felt like hours and l still could not find the baby. 'Just how deep did they bury her!' Finally, finally, l could see the baby's little toe and this gave me more determination to dig. Its legs were now fully unearthed and its belly slowly appearing, then an arm and finally, its head. The baby looked positively dead and after that digging workout. l passed out on the ground finally giving up on my little life.
I was so stuck in that depression and so down-spirited that l did not hear the baby's coughs and gasps for breath. However, l did notice my sisters running towards to me looking horrified. "EDENA! How could you bury a baby in our backyard? How could ruin our reputation like this? Where did the baby even come from?" I almost died from spitting blood; "YOU BRATS! Why are you doing this? We're a family! How could you betray me?" At this point, people were starting to gather around our small hut to see the drama and get some entertainment.
Mira shook her head in denial: "We don't know what you're talking about Edena. We're just telling it like we see it. Besides, this is the first time we saw the baby and you> Could you explain to everyone here how you got this baby?" Calming down my chaotic heart quickly, l tried to worm my out of the situation. "You saw just the same as everyone. I dug the baby out of the ground." Freya chuckled knowingly before addressing the audience: "Yes! We all saw you doing this. But this ultimately doesn't answer the question." I glared at her venomously: "Why are you doing this?" Mira just looked at her nails nonchalantly: "Answer our question first and then we'll answer yours."
I laughed madly: "GOOD! GOOD! VERY GOOD! If l Edena don't make you spit blood, God will strike me dead!" I wiped sweat from the pressure off my forehead before continuing: "I don't know why you, my two sisters are denying knowing this child. This child is your nephew and my child!" Everyone collectively gasped in shock and astonishment.
