Chapter 12 – mature
Recap: Reacting much faster than my little sister, l raced to my other sister's side and checked for a pulse. It was extremely weak and hard to detect and this made my heart sink. Freya turned to me with tears in her eyes: "What are we going to do Mira? What exactly is happening? I am so confused. Firstly, Edena comes home with a baby and then now we see her covered in blood. My weak heart can't take it anymore." I bowed my head in silent agreement.
Mira's P.O.V
I quickly ran back to the clearing to collect some grass and herbs to cover Edena's wounds with. There was nothing else we could do for Edena except this. Honestly, l was slightly disturbed at what l saw and wanted to escape the situation as quickly as l could but she is my sister. I could not just let her die like that. 'Oh...there's some chamomile! Let's pick some of that! And oh...feverfew just in case she gets a fever. Lastly, hmm...Aloe Vera as well! This should be enough for a better recovery. Hopefully...'
After picking some herbs that l thought would be useful, l walked back to the hut hurriedly purposefully the eyes around me looking curiously at my big bundle of herbs. I wasn't getting only one leaf but whole stalks and bunches of them. They were not very heavy so l did not feel fatigued and instead increased my pace as l knew my sister was still bleeding out.
When l finally walked through the door, I saw that Freya had removed some of the oldest mats we owned and lay Edena on it. This was not because we did not want her to comfortable but because she was covered in blood and we didn't want the blood on our new woven mats. Trust me when l say those mats took ages to make since it was just me and Freya and we were quite inexperienced. Anyways, l put the herbs on the ground and tore a bit of cloth from my clothes which l would use to wipe my sister down.
"Freya! Freya! Freya! FREYA!" I shouted her name many times but she just wasn't listening, probably too shocked from the shock of all the blood. "Yes! Sorry!" I sighed heavily: "Go get some water from the well. Make sure you do it discretely so that no one sees you okay?" She nodded and ambled out of the hut leisurely. I put the chamomile and feverfew in my mouth and chewed. They were extremely bitter but l endured. I closed my eyes and then put my mouth over my sisters' to make her swallow the herbs. I held her nose and this forced her to swallow most of it. This did little to stabilise her situation but it made her more relaxed.
We had some water in the hut but we may need more so l sent Freya. Moving to another cupboard, l took out a medium sized calabash filled to the brim with water. The water was supposed to last us the whole week because we had a designated day when we were supposed to get water. Since the other villagers hated us, they made rules for us so we would never come into contact voluntarily. I hope Freya is safe.
I dipped my cloth in the water and started wiping away all the blood. However, this was an awkward job to do.
I really, really did not want to see my sister's privates...
I continued wiping until most of her skin was clean and looked for any bite or scratch marks. I smeared some of the aloe on the marks and bites so they would heal quicker but the process was extremely hard because Edena kept on twitching and groaning in pain. It was a good thing she had passed out otherwise she would be screaming in agony.
Now, l had to move on to the lower parts. She was naked so it was not like l did not see anything but when l parted her legs, my eyes almost rolled back as l was ready to faint. What exactly had this rogue done to my sister? I dipped my cloth back in water while imagining the pain my sister went through and slightly wincing at the pain she was going through.
I smothered my cloth in aloe vera and l knew it would hurt her but l did not have a choice. I started for her nib and moved slowly downwards as l approached her hole. She hadn't moved a twitch this time and l was hesitant to go further. I touched it ever so slowly but my sister let out a guttural groan which frightened me and l dropped my cloth on her body. I inhaled heavily and spurred myself to move on. I cleaned her slowly and patiently covering every inch of her body. Them l leaned down and whispered in her ear: "Don't worry sister. I'll find out who did this to you! I will! And he will pay for ruining you and our family!"
Quick note: All the herbs listed in the chapter are actual real herbs. I researched them while writing this chapter. Also, a reminder that '' means thoughts not spoken dialogue. Enjoy!
