Phillip's Pov
The rough fabric was drenched in what little water we had available before Cassie began to clean Lizzy's cuts up. The term "clean" is used loosely though. The glass of water had layer of dust coating the surface and dust also lay on the rim as every time someone stepped the floorboards above, small snowflakes of dust and wood chips fell to scatter themselves along the floor.
"They haven't done anything like this before." Thomas' voice emerged from the shadows as he stepped forwards to offer more fabric that he had removed from his jacket. "For us it was just isolation or a few punches or forcing our heads under water for long periods of time. They haven't ever done anything to this extent."
"How did they know?" I uttered my question under my breath.
"Know what?" Cassie inquired as she wrapped some of Lizzy's more serious wounds up in Thomas' jacket lining.
"That...Lizzy's Pregnant." I say slowly trying to comprehend it myself. As my words drifted away, so did my eyes, leaving her face and making their wayto her stomach. I know it most probably sounds stupid but I seemed to expect me to look different, for her to be as big asa house already. And she tried to tell me as well but everything always got in the way. If we get through.... No. Once we get through this, nothing else is getting in the way. Cassie got up to go and grab something from the other side of the room and I just lowered myself so I was close to her ears.
"You hear me Lizzy. There is a whole word out there, filled with music and art and culture and we are going to go see it all. But you just got to hold on for me. Just a little bit longer."
To my dismay she doesn't move.
Cassie returns with some clean water for Lizzy and gives her small spoonful's to ensure she stays hydrated. Thomas passes me the rest of his jacket that he had folded up for Lizzy's head to lay upon until she wakes.
With a firm creak and a heavy swing, the door in front of us is pushed open. Thomas jumps to turn off the light just before the figure enters the room...Jenny Lind. For the first time in a long while, the whole room is illuminated with the hallway lights. Causing everyone to flinch momentarily at it.
"I am not..." I began before her cold voice cut me off.
"Get the girl." She commands as two men I recognise as a protestors comes in. I instantly hold onto Lizzy a bit tighter but it doesn't take long for me to realize that Lizzy was no the girl she was referring to...
Thomas steps in front of Cassie who quickly grabs a hold of me. "I don't want to go. I don't want to go. Please. Please don't make me go. I don't want to go Phillip. Please don't make me go." She cried as she gripped into the back of my shirt with all her force.
Thomas tried to hold off the protestors but he was already weak and a few punches to the stomach caused him to topple over in pain. I tried as well but the two men just yanked the crying girl away from me and even when I went to fight back, a swift punch knocked me over before I could even get near Cassie. Thomas clawed at their ankles with his one hand that wasn't around his stomach yet this had no affect as he was swiftly kicked away.
"Don't worry. We are just going to have a little talk. Girl to girl." Miss Lind's plan and factual-like voice echoed before swinging the door shut and leaving all of us in the darkness once more.
