•Liquorice and Faith were inside of Liquorice's small blue car.
Faith was sitting on the passenger side as Liquorice drove.
Faith suggested they avoid the main roads, so they were driving on a thin dirt path, laughing as they told the other about embarrassing things they experienced.
"I fell off of a roof." Liquorice laughs, glancing between the road and Faith.
"Elaborate." Faith laughs, finding the situation a bit funny as Liquorice was practically professional when it came to climbing roofs.
"Okay so I was like thirteen," Liquorice starts, keeping her attention to the road. "And it was before puberty—I had like pimples on my face."
Faith lets out a giggle.
"Okay so, I was crying because my cat died earlier." Liquorice explains.
Faith places a hand on her heart, letting out a small "aww."
"And I guess I seen my dead cat or something, as one of my cousins threw its body up to me." Liquorice talks with her hands, laughing at the memory. "So I basically let go of the roof's ledge and fell on my cousin."
Faith laughs, looking at Liquorice.
"Poor baby Liquorice."
Liquorice doesn't laugh. Faith's laugh dies down and they are left in a silence.
The sounds of the air blowing into the car was the only thing they could hear as it grown silent between the two girls.
"F," Liquorice says after a minute of them driving. "Can I tell you something?"
"Sure!" Faith smiles, watching the trees grow closer to them.
Liquorice wanted to tell Faith about Carmen Willow. She wanted to tell her about her death, and how Liquorice came to be.
She couldn't do it yet. She was scared Faith was going to call Liquorice a phoney, a con.
Faith looks to Liquorice. Her eyes widen as the sun hits Liquorice's head perfectly. Her hair was golden and her face was perfectly sculpted by the shadows on her face.
"My name isn't Liquorice Converse."
Faith giggles. "I know silly! It's L!"
"No Faith. My real name isn't Liquorice." Liquorice began to question her identity. She felt if she didn't know who she was anymore.
"I don't love you less." Faith says, putting a hand onto Liquorice's thigh.
Liquorice felt her cheeks heat up. She quickly questioned her sexuality as Faith's finger rubs circles onto her skin.
"Faith isn't my first name too." She says honestly. "It doesn't matter though. Our name doesn't really define us."
Liquorice wasn't expecting that for an answer.
••
When Faith saw John, it was 1am and Liquorice was sleeping.
John was dressed in his usual attire, while Faith wore something different. She wore a white robe Liquorice said she stole from somewhere.
"Faith?" John looked surprised, but otherwise hid it well. "Is Liquorice here?"
"She's asleep." Faith states, staring at him accusingly.
"You hurt her, John." Faith shakes her head slowly, disapproval in her features.
John shifts on his feet. "I'm sorry."
"I'm not the one you're supposed to be saying sorry to." Faith sighs in defeat, opening the door to let John in. "She's in her room."
John nods, letting himself in. "When did she go to bed?"
"She might not be asleep."
Faith follows John to Liquorice's room, picking up the cat on the way.
"Faith, can I speak to her in private?" John asks, stopping at the door to Liquorice's room.
Faith nods, feeling her heart pound against her chest. She knew Liquorice would forgive him, and they'd make out and leave to John's, leaving Faith alone.
Faith makes her way to the living room, sitting on the couch with Cherri in her arms.
"Sometimes I wonder what you do all day, Cherri."
