Laylah's POV
My legs burned as I ran through the forest. I had to beat my previous time, I just had to. It wasn't a competition or anything, it was merely for personal gratification. It was the fact that I knew I could do it and I wouldn't stop until I did.
Come on, just a little bit further. I thought to myself, willing my body to move just a little bit faster. I could see the finish line, it was so close.
It was only a few more seconds before I finally reached it. As soon as I crossed, I brought my claws out so I could grip the ground and come to a complete stop.
I shook my body before I looked to my right, laying my eyes on my best friend, Addison;
"That was a new record Lay! You're getting faster and faster every time."
I gave her a single nod before I stretched on my two front paws, before doing the same with the back. That run definitely was the most vigorous so far, probably because I pushed myself to the very limits.
I gestured my head towards my left, silently asking her if she was ready to head back. She nodded and shifted into her cat form before jogging ahead of me.
We were, in more formal terms, known as Lattamers. In simpler terms, it just meant we were humans who could shift into different big cats. Although when we were in human form, the ears and tail stayed with us.
Addison could shift into a Leopard, while I shifted into a Panther.
Lattamers, as a species, kept themselves to themselves. We didn't like to get ourselves involved in any political dramas or wars outside of our walls. In fact, we never really discuss anything with anyone else and we liked it that way.
We liked privacy and by keeping out of everyone else's affairs, we've managed to thrive as a species.
Addison nudged me slightly, snapping me out of my trance. I looked at her and she nodded in front of her, making me look forward and internally groan.
My dad waiting for me, looking unimpressed,
"Where have you been?" My dad asked, his deep voice running straight through me. I hated getting in trouble by my dad, his voice was enough to scare me shitless.
I shifted back into my human form and stretched out my limbs before replying, "I just went for a run with Addison."
He crossed his arms over his chest, "It's almost midnight."
"I was bored and couldn't sleep."
I went to walk past him, when he stretched his arm out in front of me, preventing me from going anywhere,
"You are acting like an irresponsible child Laylah. You're twenty-four years old. You are next in line to the throne and it's about time you started acting like the Princess you're meant to be."
I narrowed my eyes at him, "I never asked to be a Princess because I sure as hell would've said no."
"You watch your tone when you're talking to me."
He looked behind me towards Addison. I turned to see that she was laying down on all fours with her head bowed. It was a sign of submission towards the royals,
"Addison, you may leave."
She nodded before giving me a quick glance and running off inside. Her parents were royal advisors, so she lived with us in the castle,
"Why must you drag her into your childish games?"
I rolled my eyes, "So going for a run is classed as childish now? How times have changed."
