Laylah's POV
I watched her walk away from me and I lay my head on my front paws, letting out a slight sound due to the pain in my back paw. It would heal itself after a while but that didn't mean it still didn't hurt. Even the healing process was painful. I was pretty sure the bone was broken and that takes a lot longer to repair itself, naturally.
I watched Brooklyn's retreating figure go round the corner of the now destroyed castle,
"Do you think she knows as well?" Venice asked me in my mind. The way Brooklyn was acting, was like she didn't know at all but I knew better. The signs were there and she more than reacted to them,
"We felt the spark V and I know she did too. I saw her eyes widen and she froze for a bit. She's never done that before."
I could practically feel Venice pace up and down in my head. She was stressed out and panicking, not only at the fact that our castle and home was now pretty much destroyed, but also at the fact that our mate apparently didn't want us,
"Just our luck that we had to be mated to an emotionless General mage."
I mentally laughed at that. We both knew she wasn't emotionless, but it made us feel better to say that she was. Somewhere inside her, there was more than just the General she was making out to be. However, I wasn't going to be the one to force it out of her either. I tried hard enough to get her to open up to me, to no avail and now that we were mates, she was avoiding me even further. If she didn't want me, she didn't want me. It was as simple as that and I'm not about to go out of my way to convince her otherwise.
Besides, we probably wouldn't even see each other again after this disaster of a day. If my Dad was weary about joining the Elite before, he would definitely be against it now.
After a few more minutes, I spotted my parents coming round the corner, followed by Brooklyn. When my parents saw me, they visibly sighed in relief and ran towards me, kneeling down beside me,
"Honey, I'm so glad you're safe." My mum spoke out, giving me a light hug upon noticing the injury to my back paw. I nodded to her to let her know I was otherwise okay.
Unlike wolves, we didn't have a pack mind link, so everything was portrayed via body language. I had to admit, a mind link would come in handy right about now though.
My Dad merely gave me a smile before he stood upright and faced Brooklyn, "Thank you for saving her General. We are in your debt."
Brooklyn bowed her head, "No need. My job was to protect her and protect her I did."
He nodded and ran a hand through his hair before turning to face the castle,
"This is the worst day in our races history. Never have we had an attack like this. I'm not sure who did it or why but I won't stop until they're caught."
My mum stood up and placed a hand on his shoulder for comfort. He gave her a loving smile before facing Brooklyn once again,
"I know I don't deserve your gratitude but I'd like to ask one more favour of you."
She nodded, "Of course."
He looked at me briefly, "I want you to escort Laylah to Equanoras. You've already been to Avanos and Dranthoven and quite frankly, I don't trust Lucrolis. Equanoras is the safest and friendliest kingdom I can think of. I don't want Laylah here right now."
I let out a small whine at the fact that he's making this decision without even asking me. He seemed to like doing that a lot and it was frustrating,
