Brooklyn's POV
*Before Brooklyn gets the call from Laylah*
A whole week without talking to Laylah felt odd. It was like a part of me was missing. I never thought that I would feel this way.
I thought coming back to work would help me to take my mind off of her, but it's only done the opposite. I couldn't stop thinking about her, whether I was working or not.
I went to visit my Mum three days ago to give her a proper account of everything that had happened since my departure, which was a lot. I also asked her what she thought I should do regarding the situation with Laylah but all she said was to follow my heart. Original I know.
I was frustrated at myself for not knowing what I wanted, even now. I liked Laylah and I missed being with her, even if it was just for a job. I wanted to be with her, but I didn't know if I was cut out to be Queen. Being a General is something I loved, and it was something I knew, something I was good at. Becoming a Queen was a whole different game.
This was a daily occurrence for me since I got back home. I would just sit and contemplate exactly what it was I wanted and every day, I would get nowhere.
Right now, though, I was sitting in the meeting room doing some paperwork. I had to evaluate the training regimes again. It needed to be done once a month and seeing as I've been gone for almost a month, it was time to do them.
There was nothing wrong with the current regime, but an evaluation was done to spot any potential improvements. For example, the current regime allows for each group to train a total of five straight days a week, for roughly eight hours a day. However, the pass rate still wasn't increasing. So, I made a note to trial a new schedule of one day on and one day off, seven hours a day. By trialling it, I can measure its efficiency and if it doesn't work, I can always go back to the previous regime.
The phone in the room started to ring and I looked at Commander Warwick, who nodded, understanding what I wanted him to do.
He stood up from the chair and walked over to the phone to answer it,
"This is Commander Warwick speaking."
I couldn't really hear what was being said on the phone. I had good hearing, but it wasn't that good. I had to be a lot closer to the phone to be able to actually hear the other end of the conversation.
"One moment."
He placed his hand over the receiver before turning to face me,
"It's Queen Laylah, General."
My eyes widened at that and I quickly jumped up from my chair, rustling a few of the papers in my haste. I took the phone from the Commander and took in a few breaths before placing the phone to my ear,
"Lay-I mean, your majesty, is everything okay?"
Luckily, I managed to catch myself before making that slip up. Despite our relationship, she was still royalty and on top of that, she was now a Queen. She held a higher status than before,
"Hello to you too, Brooklyn. Nothing has changed by the way; you can still call me by my name. As my mate, you have that right."
I couldn't help but smile at that. She was still the same, which was good to know. Goddess, I missed her,
"Apologies. Congratulations on your coronation by the way. Selestris has earned itself an amazing Queen."
"Thank you. I'm calling because we found a lead on who attacked Selestris and it leads us to Kindridas."
