I woke the next morning to my phone singing, it was Emma. I pressed accept to her video call, as soon as we were connected Emma said "TELL ME EVERYTHING!" I laughed.
"There's nothing to tell." I yawned.
"Tell me please."
"Ok." I told Emma everything about our date. About us sharing a popcorn, holding hands, telling each other that we like the other.
When I was done she said, "You two make such a good couple."
"We aren't a couple," I say repeating the same speech I told my mom last night. "We only went on one date."
"But, he asked you out again."
"Well, yeah, but-"
"There are no buts, you too like each other!"
"The definition of a couple is two people who are married, engaged, or otherwise closely associated romantically. We are not married or engaged."
"But you are associated romantically."
"One date doesn't mean we're associated romantically."
"Ok you can think that, but I'm betting on you two ending up together. I've gotta go do chores. Keep me in the loop. Bye."
"Bye," I said before Emma hung up. After Emma hung up I sat up in my bed. When I sat up I got a wave of dizziness. Everything in my room was moving, and the room itself was spinning. I held my head and closed my eyes.
After about a minute of that I looked up again. Everything was still. I knew that I should tell my mom, but I also knew that if I did then I wouldn't be allowed to go on my second date with Ashton. And it seemed wrong to spring on her that her child was having almost fainting episodes and depression and tremors and a loss in appetite and vertigo. I decided that I'd tell her but after the date with Ashton and not all at once.
I went down to the kitchen to fix a bowl of cereal for breakfast. I had just started munching when my mom entered the kitchen. "It's a little late for breakfast." I looked at the kitchen clock, it was 1:00pm.
"Well then it's brunch," I said smiling.
"Ok, the only reason you would be eating brunch at 1:00 is because you were up all night. Were you up texting your boyfriend or your best friend."
"First off, neither. Secondly, I wasn't up all night."
"Ok, I'm sorry for the assumption. On the other hand, I couldn't help but notice that you didn't correct me when I called Ashton your boyfriend."
"Well, that's technically not incorrect. I mean, he is a friend that just so happens to be male."
"You know that's not what I meant. Also, you don't go on dates with your friends."
"It's not dates, plural it was just one date."
"He asked you out again, which would make it dates plural."
"Mom, he's not my boyfriend, ok? He-he's just a guy that I like that by coincidence he likes me back."
"Do you know something that I'm a strong believer in, Sophia?" I shook my head no. "There are no coincidences in life, only destined experiences."
