My mom's words stuck with me for the rest of the week. 'There are no coincidences in life, only destined experiences.' What did she mean by that? Did she mean that I was destined to like Ashton and vise versa? Did she mean that I was destined to like someone and so was Ashton?
"Sophia! Sophia!" Emma said shaking my arm.
"Huh?"
"Ashton is waving you over to his table."
"Oh, he is? I suppose I should go see what he wants." I say getting up.
"Hey, Sophia." Ashton said in a tone that once again suggested that he was being charismatic.
"Hey, Ashton." I say swooping a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
"Will you do me the extraordinary honor of sitting with me today?"
"Sure," I say pulling out the chair beside him. "Can I ask you something?"
"You can ask me anything, I can ask you anything."
"Ok, do you believe in coincidence?"
"Um, I haven't given it much thought."
"Me either until my mom said 'There are no coincidences in life, only destined experiences'. And I've been thinking about it all week."
"What were you talking about that made your mom say that?"
"Umm," I say, a blush creeping onto my cheeks.
"You don't have to tell me it's fine." Ashton said his head hung.
"Ok, it's my turn to tell you something embarrassing." Ashton nodded. "Ok," I breathed, "we were talking about you." I could feel my cheeks getting warmer by the second. I looked down at the textbook we were suppose to be copy the formula out of.
"What about me?" Ashton said again in that same tone, his eyes sparkling.
"She was calling you my boyfriend and saying that we go on dates. And we do go on dates we do, we are going on dates, but we aren't boyfriend and girlfriend though, right?"
"Did you like your mom calling me your boyfriend?" Again in that charismatic tone.
"You didn't answer my question."
"You didn't answer mine." Ashton said, our faces inches from each other. If we weren't at school I would swear that we were about to kiss.
"How about this rock, paper, scissors. Whoever loses answers first."
"Ok, I'm game."
"Rock, paper, scissors." We say in unison. Ashton puts down rock, and I put down scissors thinking that he'd put down paper in an attempt to win over my rock.
"Ok, no I didn't like it. It was really annoying because ever since our date she's been calling you my boyfriend. No offense it's just that we've only been on one date and-"
"None taken. To answer your question I want to be, but I understand your concerns and I'll wait until your ready. No matter how long."
"You will?"
"I will." After that, the bell rung and we headed to different classes.

A week later and I'm at Emma's house for our weekly Friday night get together. "So what are we gonna spend all night talking about this week?" I ask sitting in her desk chair.
"Let's do a friend quiz."
"Ok."
"Favorite ice cream flavor?"
"Cookies and cream."
"Correct. Favorite food?"
"Scallops."
"Correct. Birthday?"
"July 23."
"Correct, favorite color?"
"Yellow."
"Correct, crush?"
"Um, you never told me."
"Oh. Next question then." Emma said blushing.
"No, no, no. I simply must find out who this mystery person is."
"Fine."
"Are they in our grade?"
"Yes."
"Are they in any of our classes?"
"Yes."
"English?"
"No."
"Spanish?"
"No."
"Math?"
"Yes."
"Are they popular?"
"No."
"Ok, ok, Is it Henry?"
"Ew, no."
"Theo?"
"No."
"Oliver?"
"No."
"William?"
"No." Emma said biting her nail.
"WILLIAM?"
"Yes."
"Awww. That's so cute!"
"Can we move on with the quiz?"
"Ok, ok sure."
"Passcode." She said handing me her phone. I entered her code and was granted access to all her apps. I quickly pressed phone and searched William. Only one came up. I looked at the profile picture and knew it was the right William. I pressed call. I handed Emma the phone.
"How could you?"
"Well excuse me if I want you to have a happy life with the guy of your dreams." I say smiling, "I just want you to have a great life." I say saying the same thing she said to me at her Christmas party.
"Hello? Hello?" William says on the phone.
"Um...hi, this is Emma from school. Um...sorry to call at this hour but...ok I don't usually do this, I never do this, but I like you, I really like you."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Your not, like, pranking me or something?"
"No, it's the truth."
"I-I like you too."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Do you wanna go out sometime?"
"Yes, yes I'd love that!"
"Awesome, oh I gotta go. See you at school."
"Yeah, see you at school." Emma ended the call, "I can't believe I did that." She breathed as she collapsed onto her bed. I laughed.
I felt at ease for the first time. I felt at peace. I felt like nothing in the world could go wrong, and even if it did it wouldn't phase me. After Emma asked me the same quiz questions and when it came to the crush question she said Ashton. Then, we watched our favorite movie and went to sleep me on the air mattress her parents had set up.
