I woke up in the hospital with an IV in my arm and a monitor showing my heartbeat. I looked and mom was sitting next to me in a plastic chair, her eyes closed and head resting on the edge of my hospital bed. I try to sit up without waking her but the moment I shifted my weight the bed made a noise causing my mom to rouse. "Mom I'm alright, really. Go back to sleep."
"No no I'm up, I'm good just a power nap. How are you doing?"
"Ok, just a little confused. How long have I been out?"
"Three days."
"Three days?" I said in shock. Just then a doctor came in with a file in his hands. He was tall with salt and pepper hair, wire glasses framed his weary blue eyes.
"Ah, good Sophia you're awake. I'm Doctor Gavin," he said extending a hand for me to shake, "I've been taking care of you while you were in your unconscious state. My team and I have been running all the tests, we've run your pulse rate, and taken your temperature and blood pressure, and done oxygen saturations, and blood tests." He pauses there. I nod and he continues.
"Sophia, have you experienced any amnesia, delusion, lack of concentration, memory loss, mental confusion, slowness in activity, or difficulty thinking and understanding?" Doctor Gavin asked.
"No."
"How about abnormality walking, increased muscle activity, involuntary movements, problems with coordination, loss of muscle, or muscle spasms?"
"Yes."
"Which or all of them?"
"Problems with coordination."
"And you didn't tell your mother because?" Dr. Gavin asked jotting what I said before on some sort of chart.
"Well, I'm not that coordinated to begin with. I trip over thin air."
"Ok, how about compulsive behavior, fidgeting, irritability, or lack of restraint?"
"No."
"Any delirium, depression, hallucination, or paranoia?"
"Yes."
"Which or all of them?"
"Depression." Doctor Gavin nodded and jotted another note down.
"Anxiety, apathy, or mood swings?" I thought about this for a second but still, my ultimate answer was no. "Difficulty speaking, tremors, or weight loss?"
"Yes. Tremors have gone through my hands once or twice." Another note.
"When did these symptoms start?"
I thought back, "December, I think." Another note.
"Have you experienced any pain in your abdomen or muscles?"
"No."
"Other than fainting have you experienced any dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, water-electrolyte imbalance, or sweating?"
"Yes, to the dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, and sweating." Another note.
"Any nausea or vomiting?"
"Yes, nausea." Another note.
"Has your menstruation cycle started?"
"Yes."
"Have you experienced any absence of menstruation, craving salty foods, darkening of the skin, excess urination, muscle weakness, or weight loss?"
"Yes, muscle weakness." Another note.
