Chapter 3

Luckily for me, our shopping trip wasn’t as bad as I expected. I mean, sure Cora and Lydia forced me to try out more clothes than I would have liked, but at least they got to compensate that by buying me food. Can't say no to free milkshake and a doughnut, can you?

By the time we got home, it was starting to get dark. After I dropped them off, I headed back to my house.

"I'm home" I called as I shut the door behind me.

"Great, come give me a hand then" my mum called from the kitchen.

I was surprised when I found my mum preparing the ingredients for a cake. She never bakes cakes. So that meant only one thing –

"Tristan's coming?" I asked jumping excitedly.

"Yup, tomorrow. Thought I'd do something for his birthday…"

"He didn't tell me he's coming!"

"Well…er…yeah. He kind of wanted to keep it as a surprise…but I really needed a hand"

"Oh, alright. I'll just act surprised" I grinned and skipped over to my mother. "So, what should I do?"

After she told me what I had to do, I couldn’t stop smiling happily as I thought back to the last time Tristan was over.

It was about two months ago, and it was great. He took me roller-blading, against my will may I add. But it was fun. He kept teasing me about how I couldn’t roller-blade and kept laughing at me every time I slipped. Until karma caught up with him and he bumped into someone and had that awkward five-seconds trying to balance himself before falling flat on his face! It still cracks me up until today.

If you haven't figured it out by now, Tristan happens to be my older brother. Unfortunately, he had to move out for college but he visits whenever he can.

And about time too, I'm going to need some serious cheering up next week. My exam week…

"How long is he staying?" I asked as I handed my mum the jug of milk.

"He didn't exactly say, but maybe a week? We'll have to just find out" she shrugged, mixing the contents of her bowl.

After I'd helped my mum with the cake and icing, and chatting about how my shopping trip went, I bid her goodnight and decided to go to bed. It was 10 pm by now, and I think I deserved to sleep after all the hard work.

I'll start revising for my exams tomorrow, I thought before I slipped into a peaceful sleep.

The sound of my phone ringing jolted me out of my slumber. I looked at the clock by the bedside and was a bit surprised when I saw that it was 8 am. Wow, I must have been really tired last night. I took my time yawning and stretching before I remembered what woke me up in the first place. My head snapped to my phone that was still ringing, mid-stretch.

I quickly snatched it off the nightstand and answered the call. In my haste to answer before it stopped ringing, I didn’t look at the caller ID.

"Hello?" I said, expecting it to be Cora.

"Eva Smith" a gruff voice said from the other end of the phone. It irked me how he knew my name, and the fact he said it like a statement and not even a question.

"Do I know you?" I asked, trying to be as casual as I could.

The stranger completely ignored me though, "There's something you might be interested in knowing –"

I heard a distant 'Okay, okay I'll do it!' I was really bothered now. Can't say my curiosity wasn't spiked but I also felt a bit concerned. Just as I was about to say something else, the call was disconnected. I felt my heart rate pick up as I thought over what just happened.
