Chapter 14

My heart thudded painfully in my chest. They didn't need any more reason to kill me but I was giving them one by disobeying their orders. I should have never come with Gavin.

"I-I'm ... I was just ..." I stammered, warily eyeing the man in front of me. His brown eyes piercing through mine, a dangerous yet amused look in his eyes.

"You were just...? I don't recall you being allowed to just wander around the place..." he pretended to be remembering something. I know I was caught red-handed, he didn't have to be an ass about it.

"I'm sorry. It won't happen again," I said.

"Are you," he paused, looking at me suspiciously, "alone?"

"What? Yes, I am," I said confidently, praying that Gavin won't show up now and maybe I could save him some trouble. I don't know why I was trying to protect him, but I figured he'd do the same to me.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'll just go now?" I said quickly, hoping I could get round him without trouble and that he wouldn't make a fuss, and that he'd get out of here before he sees Gavin.

"Eva, wait - " I squeezed my eyes shut, cringing as I turned around to face Gavin.

"Oh, joy. Gavin," the other man sneered.

"What do you want?" Gavin said. And I noticed how his voice wasn't as tense as it should be.

"Oh nothing; Richard asked me to check on Eva's room and lucky for you he sent me because if someone else found the room empty, you'd be in a lot trouble," the other man said accusingly.

Hold up.

Was this man on our side? He was kind of looking out for us. I felt relieved and I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.

"Why didn't you say something!" I said, half-joking, sighing in relief.

Now that I was relaxed, I took in the man properly. He was young, maybe in his late twenties. His chocolate brown eyes just contrasted perfectly with his dirty blonde hair and he was tan. Come to think of it, he was actually good-looking.

"Because it was funny watching you be scared," he said seriously and I raised my eye-brows shooting him a what-the-hell look and he smiled appologetically.

"What's your name?" I asked suddenly, then regretted it. It wasn't my business and it wasn't like I was going to be his friend and he worked with Richard so I should not like him.

"Ethan, what's yours?" he said smiling, and I knew he already knew mine.

"Guess," I said smiling widely.

"Oh, I don't know. Eva?"

"Good guess," I said, not being able to hide the smile. It was hard not to like this guy.

"We can go now," Gavin interrupted.

"Oh, right," I said, looking back at Ethan. We started walking slowly down the stairs and heading to my room.

"So, why did Richard send you to check on us?" I asked as we neared my room.

"I think he wanted me to tell you he wants to see you tomorrow," Ethan explained, a guilty look on his face but I just shrugged it off, thinking I was seeing things.

"Oh," was all I could say. Whenever Richard wanted me, it never ended well.

We stopped in front of my room and Gavin hadn't said a word since. And I wasn't planning on speaking to him soon.
