Chapter 23
Sunday morning. Tick, tock. We only have a little less than two days to get back to Richard before he ends Gavin's sister, Stella. And I don't think I could live with the guilt. Of losing both, Stella and her brother.
I stayed awake in bed, staring at the wall. I don't know what time it was now, but I didn't hear any movement so I assumed Gavin and Ethan were still asleep.
After a few minutes, I sighed and sat up in bed. My heart almost leaped out of my throat when I saw Ethan standing next to the window, staring back at me.
"My God, Ethan! Say something next time!" I said, putting a hand over my rapidly beating heart. If a fly just flew past me suddenly, I'd probably get a heart attack I was that paranoid these days.
"Sorry, didn't want to wake you up," he said, shooting me an apologetic smile.
"It's fine. Why are you up so early anyway?" I looked around the room, I felt something warm engulf my heart when I looked at the couch and Gavin was sleeping, mouth slightly parted and a little frown on his face.
"When are you going to tell Gavin? We don't have much time. We need to act quick - "
"I know, I know, alright! I just - I'll tell him today, promise."
Ethan gave me a look I couldn't understand, "I know this is hard. It's hard for me, even. Watching my two favourite people in the world get torn to pieces like that."
It wasn't everyday you were blessed with two amazing people like Ethan and Gavin. Behind the tough, cheerful exterior, there is a caring heart. Ethan was a lovely person, and hearing him say that I was one of his favourite people just made me feel blessed.
Ethan had a worried look on his face, a faint frown and a slightly clenched jaw. I silently threw the covers off of me and tip-toed over to Ethan, keeping an eye on Gavin so I wouldn't wake him up.
"Step outside with me?" I asked, nodding in the direction of the door.
Ethan gave me a confused glance but nodded.
He followed me outside, both of us making sure we didn't wake up Gavin.
"What is it?" he asked once we closed our room's door.
"I don't know. I want to tell Gavin, I mean, I have to. I can't keep this a secret. But what if he hates me? What if I lose him? I know I haven't known him for too long but he's been there with me through everything. He's already had a hard life and I don't want to put him through more..." my eyes started stinging as I said my thoughts outloud, making the reality of the whole situation sink in properly.
Ethan's face softened and he held my hand comfortingly, "Eva, don't worry, you won't - "
"No, you know what? I'm going to go back. Richard wants me. None of you should suffer because of me. I'll just go back on my own. I'll save us all so much time and heartbreak." As the words ran out of my mouth, I started to appreciate the idea more.
I could go back. Alone. I won't tell Gavin anything. His sister would be safe and Ethan will be with him.
And even if I wasn't going to see him again, at least I won't have to live with the fact that it was my fault that he was gone.
"What the fuck are you saying, Eva? Don't think like that. Gavin won't let you. I won't let you." Ethan said with a stern face.
"Ethan, think about it. We have no choice but to hand me in, so why not let me go but alone?" I tried, trying to make him see sense. He shook his head fiercely.
