Chapter 21

I froze, and turned around slowly, trying to come up with a good response and one that wouldn't make me look suspicious. I considered running away just as Ethan had said, but I don't think anything screamed suspicious as much as that did.

"What? Oh, no," I laughed disbelievingly, a little bit more than I should have. Bad move, Eva, bad move. "I mean, who is that? I'm sure I just look like her. Is she pretty? Don't tell me she isn't! I would like to know I look like a pretty girl," I babbled on, and the man in front of me just gave me a weird look, probably thinking I was insane. I might have made things worse, I don't know anymore.

"Sorry, she acts weird when she doesn't sleep well," suddenly Ethan (with sunglasses on) stood between me and the man, smiling apologetically. I watched in disbelief as Ethan talked to the man, risking blowing his cover. "She's a little bit - " Ethan lowered his voice, twirling his fingers next to his head, symbolizing me being crazy. My jaw dropped. Oh I will so get him for this.

"Yep, time to go to bed now, honey," suddenly Gavin had his arm around my shoulder and was dragging me away as quickly as he could.

We left quickly, and jumped in the car before anyone could think twice.

"Hey! I'm not crazy!"

"You're an idiot."

"I'm sorry Eva, I have to agree with Gavin on this one," Ethan said, shooting me a fake sad smile through the mirror.

"Hey!"

"I would like to know I look like a pretty girl. Seriously, who says that?" Gavin sneered. "You couldn't be more stupid even if you tried."

I thumped him on the head and he just shot me a glare but his eyes still had a shadow of amusement.

"How did he even know who I was?" I asked.

"Are you trying to prove my point?" Gavin asked, and now it was my turn to glare at him.

"Eva, let me break it down for you," Ethan interupted, speaking slowly, "You went missing for a few days. Your family probably called the police and had your pretty face all over the local news."

My mouth formed an O as I understood now that my face was going to be recognizable all over town.

"So, why didn't I tell him it was me? He was going to take me home, right?"

"Probably, but then you'd be serving yourself on a golden plate to Richard," Ethan explained.

"What you want to leave us already?" Gavin asked, a cold under-tone to his voice.

"If I could go home and be safe with my family?" I said, not understanding why he's even asking a question like that.

For the rest of the ride, we were all silent. Gavin seemed to go back to one of those moods where he hates everybody and he hates the world. He sat, brooding and not saying a word. Ethan was focusing on the road and after a long while, we reached our little hotel.

We left the car, and Ethan took the shopping bags. We hurried to our room, not giving anyone a chance to notice us.

Ethan stopped to unlock the door, and we all walked in after him. Gavin was still in a bad mood and I planned to just ignore him for the rest of the night.

"Yay! Food!" Ethan said happily, taking out the snacks I had bought and munching on them straight away.

"Hey! Save us some!" I said, grabbing the bag from his hands.

"Give that back," Ethan said in a scary voice, towering over me.

"No!"

"Yes."
