Jane didn't know what she was doing, but she pushed away her thoughts as she stood in front of Mike's house. The rain was falling gently against her skin with only a thin jacket to protect her, and her curls were slicked against her cheeks, partly wet from the rain but mostly from her tears. She looked up at his silent house, her eyes instantly flickering to the window farthest from her visions, Mike's room.
She bit her lip and swallowed down her anxiety, climbing up the drainpipe that let her crouch down on the roof. She slowly looked into the window she was passing, sighing in relief when she saw Mike's sister Nancy's light off, her small body hunched underneath the pink sheets. Once she passed her window, she sighed in relief when she recognized Mike's dark blue curtains from when he showed her around his entire house at the weekend like an excited tour guide. She remembered how adorable she found his flustered state as he grabbed her hand, explaining nearly every object in the house like she didn't know what it was.
Jane let out a sigh of relief when she felt his window slide open, grateful that he must leave it unlocked at night in such a safe neighborhood.
Once she quietly slipped in, she noticed Mike's lanky body curled beneath the sheets. His eyelashes fluttered peacefully against his milky skin, the reflection of the rain in the dark room make dark beautiful shadows cover his cheeks in strange shapes. His plump lips let out small gasps of air as he slept, cute little snores escaping every few seconds. As soon as her foot landed on a particularly creaky floorboard, she snapped her hand over her mouth and glanced at his door worriedly. Luckily nobody seemed to stir but she froze slightly when his eyes fluttered open in confusion.
He scanned the room, his eyes widening in disbelief as if he was seeing an angel in front of him. Mike sat up quietly, his voice coming out in a low whisper as he saw the silhouette of Jane's small body.
"El?" he whispered softly.
Jane felt awkward, chewing nervously on the sleeve of her jacket. "H-Hi."
He frowned. "What are you doing here?", he glanced at his clock, "...it's one in the morning. Is e-everything okay?"
"I-I'm sorry" she choked out quietly, "I shouldn't have come here. I just couldn't sleep and didn't really want to be alone."
Mike kept his voice soft. "It's okay, El."
"I can leave" she whispered hesitantly.
"I don't want you to leave" he replied gently.
Jane continued standing awkwardly as he scanned her, his eyes widening with worry at the sound of the rain outside and her damp curls. Her frame was shivering slightly and he felt like an idiot, moving over to make room for her.
"H-Here, get in. You must be freezing, let me get you a blanket."
Jane stumbled over her words quietly. "I-It's okay, uh- really, I can- I'll leave, thank you though. I'm just going to head back to bed, I don't know why I came here."
Mike raised an eyebrow sternly. "There is no way I am letting you back out in the rain to walk home, come on...just sleep here. It's okay."
"Mike, I-I-"
"It's okay" he murmured softly.
Jane took off her wet jacket to reveal her large t-shirt covering most of her soft pajama pants, shivering slightly at the chilly air. She lowered herself down onto Mike's bed hesitantly, keeping as much distance only to feel him hand her a soft blanket like the respectful boy that he was. He watched her carefully, wanting nothing more than to take her in his arms and shelter her from the cold to keep her warm and dry, but he held himself back. Once her body relaxed into the warm covers, she turned over to face Mike gently, a couple of feet of space between them as they both breathed quietly.
