(Anyone else feel like crying when you're writing and 'every breath you take' starts playing? Just me? Okay.)
The sun was shining over the Wheeler house, the sky clear and blue as if nothing bad could ever happen. Inside the house, was two teenagers both too smitten with each other to care about anything else, an innocent bond forming between them. If only one of them knew the truth behind how their love had started, and what secrets the girl he liked was hiding from him, too afraid to mention her true feelings.
"I still don't know why we are doing this" Mike grumbled stubbornly as he laid down on the sofa, longs legs stretched out in front of him.
Jane giggled. "Because it's fun, now hold still!"
He huffed slightly but tried to catch the popcorn in his mouth, furrowing his eyebrows to concentrate. Jane had introduced this stupid game as soon as he had invited him over to her house, making him catch the popcorn with no hands. Mike was concentrating hard so that he could impress her, moving his head quickly to match her aim. But as soon as he heard Jane's melodic giggle and felt his insides light up like when he stepped into the sunshine, he was smiling too hard to keep his mouth open.
"You're terrible at this!" she groaned, "stop smiling, Mike."
Mike grinned at her sweetly. "Just me, I'm trying to."
She felt her cheeks heat up instantly and whacked his arm so that he didn't know how much it really affected her. Her eyes scanned over his striped sweater, and the way that his dark hair had started to curl at the edges by his ears, a strange feeling blooming inside of her chest. Just watching his smile grow as his eyes softened, it was enough to make Jane forget everything, perhaps even her own name.
Jane had spent the last few days torturing herself by staying as close to Mike's side as possible. Every single second was occupied with laughter, happiness and just pure intentions on Mike's part. But Jane could not forget what had brought them together and that after everything that had happened, she made a stupid deal that she had no choice but to follow through with. She didn't really know why the last few days had been spent with Mike, she had rushed to accept every offer to hang out and made him indulge in fun activities to keep them occupied. But deep down she knew exactly why she had been doing it.
She had been trying to distract herself.
She had been trying to distract herself from the fact that she was using Mike, that in the end she would leave him with a broken heart and bruised soul. She was distracting from the fact that everything had been for show, that she had been hanging out with him to make him fall in love with her quicker, not so that she could enjoy herself. Most of all, she was distracting herself from the fact that her feelings were not so fake anymore.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Mike frowned slightly, noticing how she had stopped tossing popcorn pieces in his direction.
"Huh?" Jane shook out of her daze.
Mike furrowed his eyebrows, "You just look really sad."
A weight settled into her chest and she stopped her thoughts, hoping that she could come up with a good enough excuse. She cursed under her breath, leaning closer so that she could smile at him innocently. "I'm fine, Mike. Just thinking..."
"Somethings wrong" he stated softly, scanning her eyes.
"Am I that easy to read?" her smile didn't reach her eyes.
Mike grinned up at her. "Yeah, I know exactly what you're thinking all of the time."
No you don't, Jane thought to herself bitterly, Not all of the time.
