Jane bit her lip nervously, her legs bouncing - a nervous habit which she undoubtedly picked up from Mike - as she waited outside of the school. Her father had dropped her off with a smile and a lecture about boys, too distracted to notice the tears forming in her daughters eyes as she counted down the seconds that she had left until Mike would know everything. She knew that she needed to tell him tonight and she also knew that everything that she had grown to live for, would come crashing down in an instant.

She waited outside shivering in the cold until a teacher asked if she was okay. She realized that she needed to toughen up and actually attend the dance, unable to disappoint the boy that was waiting in there for her. But deep down inside she knew that this was the night where everything would change, where she would finally have to tell Mike everything about the deal and how cruel she had been before falling in love with him. If only she had seen the redness of his cheeks when she kissed him or the soft sigh that left his plump lips when she curled up to him, she may have known the entire time what she had been living for.

As soon as she walked inside and met Mike's gaze, everything else disappeared.

Mike had been waiting nervously with wobbly legs and messy hair, ignoring his friends telling him that everything would be perfect. As soon as he laid eyes on Jane, covered in a blue and pink spotty dress that hit her knees softly, with a wide skirt that made her look adorable with her wide eyes, he stuttered into silence. His eyes softened at the fear in her eyes, thinking that she was nervous about her first dance, and he walked over to her gently as she smiled at him.

"You look..." his voice was breathless, "...beautiful."

Jane's eyes melted into pure stardust, as if they shone brighter until they practically burst with sunshine. She took his clammy hands in hers, her heart filling with warmth at the sight of his dorky outfit and adorable smile.

Her voice was softer than ever before. "Thank you."

Mike noticed her gaze drift over to Lucas who was sitting with Max, the girl still giving her a cold stale look. He squeezed her hand in hopes to comfort her, hoping to reassure her that he wasn't going to let anything ruin her night. He had been practicing all night in his head, rehearsing exactly what he would say to her, how he would dance with her until they asked them to leave and made sure that she always felt loved and taken care of. That was all that Mike wanted to do, take care of Jane for as long as she would let him.

"Hey", he tried to take her attention away gently, "...we are going to have a good night, okay? I promise you that you will have a great time."

She smiled back at him lightly. "The best time."

He saluted her like a dork to make her laugh, the giggle lighting up his insides with nothing but complete and utter happiness. As he took her hands and led her to the dance floor, he thought that he would be happy for the rest of his life just doing stupid things to make her laugh. He would put on a clown suit, dance around awkwardly or even put whipped cream on his face if it meant that she would always giggle back at him.

Every Breath You Take by The Police started playing softly and she gave him a pretend glare, trying to stop him from dragging her over to the dance floor.

"I'm terrible at dancing" she defended with a plea, "...please don't make me dance, I will be awful at it. Trust me, I am the worst dancer ever."

"You can't be worse than me" he laughed, putting his arms around her waist.

She looped her arms around his neck. "I-I'll step on your feet..."

"I don't care" he told her softly.

Her eyes softened and she melted into his embrace, her body slotting against his like it was always meant to be there. In that moment, there was nothing other than Mike's gentle smile and chocolate eyes over the soft music, lights making him shine even brighter in her eyes. She let herself get lost in the moment, almost completely forgetting about what she would have to do after this moment was over.
