it was always real

song - Fade by Lewis Capaldi

~"I wish somebody would've told me
That I'd end up so caught up in need of your demons
That I'd be lost without you leading me astray
Guess that I'm a fool for the way that you caught me
Girl, you make my heart break more every day
But don't fade away"~

When Jane woke up, she was hoping that it all had been nothing but a bad dream. Mike had forgiven her and would be waiting for her when she woke up, like nothing ever went wrong between them. She told herself that none of it had happened, that she had imagined all of it but then she looked around. She recognized the dark blue sheets and the nerdy posters on the wall, and she knew that she was in Mike's room.

That she was in Mike's room alone.

A terrible sense of disappointment fell over her as she looked around and didn't see him around. She sat up slowly, her eyes filling with sadness as if she shouldn't have expected anything different. She could remember his soft voice in her ear as he whispered apologies, letting her fall asleep in his arms one last time. A sudden fear crossed over her brain, that perhaps it really was the last time where he would be there for her. Most of all, she could remember the words that she had been waiting for, the words which he had whispered when he thought that she was asleep. The words that meant nothing to her.

It meant nothing if he wasn't there.

After realizing that he must have already left, Jane exited through his window with a heavy heart. She needed him now more than ever, but he seemed as if he was punishing her for what she did. She was tired of this back and forth arguing between them both. When she walked into the classroom, her heart sped up as soon as she saw him.

Mike was sitting in his usual seat, his chin resting on his hand tiredly as he stared straight ahead of him. He looked as if he was deep in thought, maybe like he was trying to figure something out judging by the small crease between his eyebrows which were nearly covered by his thick dark hair. His dark eyes blinked slowly as they met hers, his eyelashes fluttering like gentle butterfly wings against his sharp cheekbones. He looked away a moment later, staring down at his desk nervously, and her heart fell inside her chest. Jane was worried that he didn't mean what he told her and that he would be happy with someone else that didn't break his heart and ruin his trust. She wasn't sure what she was going to be without him.

Jane sat down slowly, coughing awkwardly. "Hi."

"Hi" he whispered in return.

She glanced at him. "Are you going to continue ignoring me?"

"Stop it-"

Jane interrupted him in a snappy tone. "I just want to move past this..I want you to forgive me and for us to continue where we left off. When everything was okay and when we made each other happy because Mike..you made me so h-happy."

"Please just don't-"

Her voice was quiet. "I heard you last night."

Mike froze.

"You didn't want me to but I did" she struggled, "I did hear it. You told me that you loved me but if you won't let us move on, then how am I supposed to believe that?"

Mike stayed silent for a long time, his gaze softer than before but still lacking the bright warmth that usually shined out of them. Jane watched him with sad eyes, unable to swallow as her eyes filled with tears. Deep down she thought that he would forgive her and that they could move past this but it didn't seem like it was going to be the case.

He finally cracked a small smile and she frowned. "What if we don't move past this?"

"W-What?" she choked, a tear slipping down her cheek.
