It has been a year since they all left for college it was the summer before their sophomore year when Bucky was at summer training for football when he saw his sister and mom walking into the field he took off his helmet and said "Mom Becky what are you two doing all the way down here."
"We need to talk." Winnie said with red eyes.
"Okay hold on." Bucky said
He ran over to Coach and told him that his mom needed to talk to him. He walked back over to her and his sister and they walked towards the tunnel. "James honey.. um I need you to come back to TN for a few days. Um your daddy isn't coming home baby I'm sorry."
"Dad.. isn't coming home? Like he has to be deployed longer again mom?' he said
"No baby I mean he got hurt and didn't make it." Winnie said
"Mom please tell me your lying .. please tell me that he just has to stay longer." he said with tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry baby" Winnie said as she hugged her son as he broke into tears.
Sam and Clint saw him and wondered what could cause Bucky to break into tears like that. Once he calmed down he walked over to coach and told him that he needed to go home a few days. Coach hugged him and said "I'll give you a week long break okay son."
"Thanks Coach." he said
Sam stopped him and said "Man what's going on?'
He looked down and said "My dad ins't coming home guys I have to go home and help my mom I'll be back in a week."
They both hugged him and "Call us if you need anything man." Clint said
He went to change and then went by his dorm and packed a bag then followed his mom home. When he got home he sat in his room and cried then he called Steve even if he knew Nat would be around.
"Hey Buck what's up?' Steve said
"Hey man.. um it's been awhile I could really use you as a friend right now." he said
"You know that I could lose Nat if she found out." Steve said
"Steve I don't care I just lost my dad I just had to drive all the way up here to TN to be here for the funeral." he said
"Buck I am so sorry. I know how much your dad meant to you and how much looked up to him. When's the funeral?' Steve said
"It's on Saturday at noon." he said as he wiped tears.
"Okay I'll try my very best to be there for you Buck." he said
"How's things with you Steve?' Bucky said
"Things are good. Me and Natasha got engaged earlier this summer." Steve said
"Oh that's good." he said
"Yeah I had Dylan and Wanda help me pick out the ring." Steve said
He looked down and said "Dylan?'
"Yeah.. she's doing well too. She's a English LIt major here at UNC." Steve said
"Well it's good to hear that everyone that hates me is doing well." he said
"Buck.." Steve said
"It's fine." Bucky said
They talked for another hour then Steve hung up and talked to Nat about going to the funeral. She looked over at a sleeping Dylan with an almost 3 year old Paisley and said "Yeah you can go Steve."
"Thanks baby' he said as he hugged her. That weekend Steve drove up and went to funeral where he watch his best friend who has such a tough exterior break into tears.
