I CANT BELIEVE IT I CANT BELIEVE IT!! THE LADY WILDCATS HAVE DONE IT THEY HAVE DONE IT THEY WENT COMPLETELY UNDEFEATED!!
The announcers had screamed only two nights ago. We had made it to the championship in the sweet 16 march madness bracket, and won, I couldn't get the announcers words out of my head.
"Excuse you..." I immediately snapped out of my daydream.
"Hey why don't you watch yourself!" Rob put his arms around me in a protective way.
"You're lucky he was here." The guy pointed at me and walked away.
"Rob it was really my fault, I wasn't paying any attention." I looked up into Rob's eyes.
"He still didn't need to treat you like that. Hey you still in to coming to the Las Vegas bowl?"
"Of course!" I snuggled up under his arm and we started the long wall back to the dorms.
Rob and I talked about almost everything on our walks. Suddenly my phone vibrated in my backpack.
"Can you look at it and see who it is?" I looked at Rob.
"Yeah." he reached into my backpack to get my phone. "Umm D it's your coach...."
"What?!?" Preston never called me unless it was an emergency, and in the off season. I slid the screen so the call would go through.
"Hello?"
"Dylan?"
"Yeah. Preston?"
"Yeah...Umm you know how Kennedy had that sore throat?"
"Yeah is she alright?"
"Not really she's in the hospital they are putting her in ICU they don't know what wrong."
"I'll be right there."
Rob looked at me with concern. I started telling him what Preston told me. Then I, with Rob trailing, sprinted the rest of the way to the dorms. I burst through the doors, Zoe quite startled looked at me. With tears starting to come I told Zoe what I knew.
Kennedy Riggs had started out just as the girl I'd known from basketball camps, but we'd become very close over the season. I considered Kennedy like a younger sister, except she was older than I was. She was from a small town close to Gillette. She was exceptional sweet and encouraging, I loved being a guard with her. I couldn't believe she was in the hospital.
"Let's go." Zoe grabbed my arm. She knocked on the boys' dorm, Chris opened the door. "Chris I'm sorry but I'm going to have to cancel tonight Kennedy is in the hospital."
"Ok, keep us updated on how she's doing." Rob appeared behind Chris. Chris being 6'2 was tall, but Rob being 6'6 was taller. Right as we were leaving Rob came out of the room and grabbed me. We stood there hugging for what seemed like forever.
"She'll be ok." He whispered into my ear.
"Thanks." I looked up at him.
We kissed and I hugged him a little tighter before letting go.
"Keep me updated." I nodded and followed Zoe out.
Once we arrived at the hospital we were greeted by Desha, Mollie, Paige, and several others from the team. Everyone wore very solemn expressions. We all sat there for close to 20 minutes before Preston finally came out.
"They think she has a bruised esophagus and so she couldn't get enough air in. She just thought it was a sore throat. The doctors will have to preform a small surgery, it should be done with in 2 hours." Preston flopped down in one of the chairs, but soon the doctors called him back.
About 45 minutes later the finally rolled Kennedy back to surgery. Her family was coming as soon as they could, but that wouldn't be until tomorrow.
Almost two and half hours later Preston came back. "She's fine they have her on some heavy sleeping pills to keep her asleep. Which is what y'all need to do. Go back to the dorms and get some rest you can visit her in the morning." None of us moved. Slowly one person would leave then another, until Zoe and I were the only ones left.
"We should probably head back." I looked into Zoe's eyes and she nodded back.
I don't know what happened but when we got back to Posada hall I lost it, while everyone cried in the waiting room, I had kept it together and comforted them. Zoe walked in front and soon had left me. I trudged along as I realized how serious this situation was.
When I got back to the dorm the door was open which was odd but through all the tears that were falling I couldn't tell what was what. I made it to my bed and was about to flop down when I realized Rob was laying in it. He grabbed me and pulled me into a hug I sobbed into his shirt making it damp. He held me like that until I fell asleep.
