"I agree that Lauren should get out more." Mr. Nelson smiled as he walked toward me. "You're always around here, Lauren."

"I don't mind being home, it doesn't bother me, trust me." I said while cautiously crossing my arms over my chest.

"Lauren, you are 18 years old. You should begin to get out." Ozzie suggested. Ricky mockingly chuckled as he stood behind his father. Then, he began to try to sneak towards the steps.

Ozzie had a sixth sense when it came to parenting. Without even looking behind him, he knew exactly what his son was doing. "Wait there, Rick."

Ricky let out a groan, then turned back toward us with an indifferent expression on his face.

"I've got a proposal." Ozzie rubbed his hands together. "You and Lauren are always at each other's throats."

"Because she's a control freak." Ricky interjected.

"And he's a child." I snapped back.

Ozzie squeezed his eyes shut as he stood between us. Both Ricky and I stood in defensive stances, ready to attack at any moment. Sadly for Ozzie, he stood right on the battle line.

"Whatever your reasons." Ozzie exhaled. "I think both of you need to spend a little more time together to understand one another."

"With all due respect, Mr. Nelson, I figure if Ricky and I don't understand each other by now, we never will." I shook my head.

"Exactly, I'm 17 and she's 18. We're both young adults old enough to know exactly who we get along with and who we don't." Ricky gave a nod as he crossed his arms.

"Well, you both agree on one thing, that's a start." Ozzie rubbed the back of his neck. "And you'll find even more common ground tonight."

"The only thing I'm finding tonight are cute dames down at the party I'm headed to." Ricky grinned as he stood next to his father. "Besides, I should get going. I'm sure it's heating up right about now."

"Well, that's exactly what I was going to mention. You should get going to that party, Ricky." Ozzie crossed his arms with a wide smile.

"Thank you." Ricky bowed his head sarcastically then adjusted the collar on his shirt.

"As long as you bring Lauren." Ozzie motioned toward me. I was shocked, my mouth fell open. Ricky had long surprised me in life. Within that year there were many things Ricky experienced that I knew I wasn't going to experience anytime soon.

"That's not gonna happen!" Ricky shouted with crossed arms.

"Come on, Rick, you're practically siblings." Ozzie tried to reason with his son.

"We are not siblings!" Both Ricky and I said in unison. Ozzie stood there between us and laughed.

"See? You two are more alike than you think." He pointed out with risen eyebrows.
