Quiet, still, soothing.
Those were the many ways Kaid could describe the darkness of the night. After he and China's escapades she'd fallen asleep from his loving. But Kaid remained restless, smoking his own supply up on his balcony in front of the full moon.
His black durag and bare chest reflected the moons vibrancy as he smoked, standing straight up as if he were in the army and felt the cool breeze cool his chest. Kaid had been out here for no longer than ten minutes, but to him, it felt like hours and he loved every second of it.
The night was the only time he had to himself. His thoughts rejecting the softness of his pillow and the comfort of his comforter. He had too much on his mind to be asleep, anxious for tomorrow's work. When finally he'd had enough of nature's beauty, he came back inside, typed in the password to his phone rather than using his fingerprint, and scrolled to his contacts stopping at Noonie's name.
Her number hadn't changed. Neither did his. But the pair still didn't keep up with each other, they let themselves be.
Pressing on her name with his cold fingers, Kaid blew smoke from out of his mouth and into the kitchen's air, listening to the phone ring all of three times before he hung up out of cold feet. He let out a frustrated groan, tossing his phone to the side and rubbing his forehead.
Unexpectedly, his phone lit up, showcasing the five-year-old picture of Noonie with the same whipped cream on her nose and pout on her face. Kaid never changed that picture.
He picked up the phone, placing the blunt behind his ear and sliding to the left to answer.
"Hello?"
"You called"
"I hung up"
"But you called"
"...it was a mistake"
"If it was a mistake you wouldn't have hung up, I know you, Shaun"
Kaid was silent.
"Can't sleep?" Noonie asked turning to the other side of her bed.
"No" He admitted.
"I can't either, seems like it's the same routine every year"
"We can break that cycle"
"I don't think it's a good idea"
Kaid sighed, taking the blunt from behind his ears and hitting it to soothe his anxiety. He was attempting to do what his 'therapist' advised.
"Why?"
"...I don't know...I just don't we should drag the situation ya' know?"
"If I'm being honest no I don't know. The death of our child will always be a big deal there's no possible way to make it more than what it is"
"You sound angry"
"I'm not angry" Kaid sighed. "It makes me angry when you think I'm angry"
"Can I explain my reasoning before you start?"
"I haven't prevented you from doing that so go ahead"
Noonie went silent. Not because she didn't have a reason but because of Kaid's attitude.
"When I'm with you I feel like that scared lost girl in high school"
