Here he was yet again catching blame for someone else's actions. Justin was simply standing up for someone, one of his many faults as it seemed, and getting in trouble. The only real time he got in trouble for something bad was stealing from the store. "He didn't do anything wrong! Don't blame him, I watched the whole thing!" The by stander yelled pulling at Justin's arm trying to keep the police from taking him away. "Ma'am, we know this kid, he was just released from an 18 month sentence for this very same reason."
"And what reason is that?"
"Fighting."
"Hunny, if you were any real kind of cop you would ask questions first. Also you wouldn't have been over there sipping your coffee and joking around with your partner. So I suggest you let this young man go and start asking questions to the ones that witnessed what happened." With that the cop obliged and asked her what happened but refused to release Justin. The woman and her friend were separated and asked what happened. They gave their story and pointed to Jack and May so the police could ask them as well because they noticed them watching too. Jack and May told the same story the women told and then turned their attention to the battered woman still sitting on the ground. The battered woman repeated the same story with a little more information about what happened before her husband struck her.
The police had no choice but to release Justin and take the husband to jail instead. Justin kindly thanked the women for standing up for him and walked away. Jack and May stood smiling at him, May wrapped her arm around his back and rested her hand on his shoulder. Jack told him he was proud of him and they went home. Justin knew right from wrong, he knew he shouldn't have stepped in like he did but he wasn't going to stand there and allow that man to get away with putting his hands on a woman. Especially after finding out they were married. They arrived home and May showed Justin the room they set up for him and told him they were scheduled for court next week to finalize the paperwork for them to be his legal guardians. They weren't adopting him, although they would have loved to, just becoming legal guardians so he could have a stable home and go back to school.
Later that evening Justin and JT were playing outside in the backyard on the trampoline, and May received a disturbing phone call. At first it started out normal, a little girl was on the phone and asked to speak to Justin. So May called him in to get on the phone. "Hello?"
"We know where you are, this isn't over." The voice said in a low evil tone. Justin hung up the phone and went back outside brushing it off as if it never happened, he didn't seem bothered by it at all. After Justin went back out the phone rang again. May answered, this time the same low evil voice came across the receiver. "Keep your eyes on him May. He is going to disappear soon." Then the line went dead. May's eyes opened wide as she looked at the phone in fear. Jack walked up next to her and asked who it was. May couldn't speak, Jack lowered himself to look at her face. "May? Babe? Are you in there? Hello?" He said waving his hand in front of her eyes. "Babe, say something."
"Someone just called." May finally said softly. "People call through phones all the time babe." Jack said laughing a little. "No, they said, 'Keep your eyes on him, he is going to disappear soon." She said. "Who is going to disappear and who said it?"
"I think Justin, and I'm not sure. Maybe his mom."
Jack stood motionless for a second, then raced to the window to check on the boys. He peaked through the blinds and seen the two jumping on the trampoline. He relaxed comforted by the sight of them laughing and doing flips but part of him was nagging at him, telling him to make them come inside. "Maybe, it was just a prank call." May suggested setting the phone down gently on the counter staring at Jack with her eyes still wide. Her eyes were almost like a perfect circle, big and bright like a full moon on a dark night. Jack loved that about her. Those hazel eyes of hers lit up and captivated him. "Yea, Maybe." He agreed. He walked over and wrapped his arms around her trying to comfort her and let her know that everything was going to be fine.
They stood holding each other trying to brush off the call, still deciding if they should take it seriously or not. They still didn't know the full story behind what Justin has been through with them anyways. So maybe it really was nothing to worry about. JT burst through the back door causing Jack and May to nearly jump out their skin. "MOM! DAD! THEY GOT HIM! THEY GOT HIM! HELP!" JT yelled franticly waving his arms in the air. "Whoa, calm down, what are you talking about?" Jack asked catching JT from tripping over his own feet from running to fast. Tatiana was startled by the door slamming open and ran out into the kitchen to find out what was happening. "They got him!"
"Who got who?"
"Justin, his parents, they got him." JT struggled to say running short of breath. Jack and May looked at each other in shock realizing they made a mistake. Jack should have listened to his gut and made the boys come inside.
