After 20 minutes of indie rock and texting on the tram, Kurtis changed to the train. A thing about Kurtis is his weird talent of identifying trains. It comes from a phase in his much younger years when he was obsessed with trains and rail transport. Nowadays, it torments him. He can't go east Croydon station without seeing Gatwick express and immediately thinking "Class 387/2 electrostar on the Gatwick express service to Brighton from London Victoria, stopping at Gatwick airport, 177kmph formed of 12 coaches." It's tough.
Meanwhile, Martha had to rush to get changed. She threw on a big red jumper, some leggings and brown winter boots. As she's never been to an ice rink, she thought it would be cold (spoiler alert: it's warmer than outside) and so decided to wear her green winter jacket. Her route was a train for one stop and a five minute walk. She quickly texted her mother, not realising that she had arrived home five minutes ago, and left for her friends.
About 10 or so minutes later, Kurtis's train arrived. He stepped out of the 8th car of the 8 car train, and opened his phone. For absolutely no reason, he decided to text the group that he had arrived at Streatham.

Squeak "oh it's you. Sorry you scared me." Martha sighed softly while Kurtis raised an eyebrow, questioning how easily startled one has to be to be scared by someone clearly in front of them.
"How easily startled are you?"
"Shut up, I'm tired. You came out of nowhere."
"I literally walked towards you for thirty seconds."
"Really? That's long"
"So is the platform. Why'd you have to sit all the way at the front?"
"I don't know. I like the front, I guess"
"I like the back"
Martha simply responded with a face that perfectly coincided with the 😶 emoji.
"...what?"
"Nothing." She quietly responded, still trying to comprehend his unintentionally outrageous comment earlier. They walked and talked, mostly about dark movie plots, then reached the leisure centre. Martha had never really gone inside until today so it was a new experience, like going to see the next Godzilla movie: you know roughly what's going to happen but you watch anyway to see if it's good. For Kurtis, however, this was his second time. His neighbour friends between 13 and 19 went there about nine months ago. All Kurtis gained from that small outing of six boys and girls was a scab, several aches and some ice skating experience. Emphasis on some, as this is important to this arc.
Alice waited for them inside the leisure centre. She happened to be with the three others she invited.
Dennis Star was one. He was tall with blonde curly hair reaching to his neck. It seemed he fell for the "cold ice rink" illusion as well, as he had brought a scarf and a winter jacket as well as timberlands. For now, he was the "artsy" one of the group. For now...
Faye "Fay" Fraser is the second person there. She's normally quiet and often a bit secluded but in reality she's somewhat sarcastic, cynical and incredibly bored. It's understandable, though. Having two siblings is pretty annoying, especially when one is constantly harassed by older girls for being one of the most adorable year 7s. With Faye, there was a weird rumour in year 9 that she did karate but we promise ourselves that it wasn't just because she was Chinese.
Linda "Lin" Castillo is the other girl wearing a jacket one size too big and brown boots, not because she's cold or thought she'd be cold but because she thinks it's "cute" or something like that. About 35-45% of her personality is based on being "cute" or following some sort of kawaii aesthetic. Unfortunately though, her personality doesn't match up that well. She's incredibly energetic and at times, a bit of a brat. There's also a DEEP AND INTENSE love for K-pop and cliche Korean drama. Chances are her room looks like a Korean pink version of Martha's room.
Kurtis and Martha arrived and said their greetings. Lin, however, groaned at the sight of Kurtis. She didn't like him as much as she should. Or at all for that matter. Nobody really knows why because she's way too vague about it. Kurtis, however, doesn't not like her as much. His automatic setting is "I like you until you don't like me." He simply shrugged and looked around for the missing American.
"Where's Jae? Wasn't she coming?"
"She's in the bathroom. So is Claudia."
"Right, right. Ok I'm going in now." Kurtis began to head inside with Alice and Martha, catching site of Jae and Claudia through the glass doors. Jae was wearing a brown aviator jacket and blue jeans whereas Claudia wore one of those black, slightly puffy jackets with the shiny zips and grey jeans.
"Hey we have the same jacket." Jae pointed at Kurtis's blue jacket then her own. Kurtis realised this and smiled in childish surprise.
"Oh cool! My cousin bought it for me from America."
"Oh that's cool. Alright, guys. Let's go slip on ice." Alice led the group to the check-in area to pay then led everyone to the ice rink. After arriving to rent the ice skates, Martha sat down on the wooden bench that was way too low to casually get up from. Kurtis sat next to her to put on the skates.
"The hell do you put these on?"
"Just adjust those straps. Pull those up then tighten it then put them back down."
"Thanks. Kurtis, you've done this before?"
"Yeah, once."
Alice had already put on her skates and was waiting just outside the entrance for the others while they fiddled and attempted to adjust the shoes. Kurtis finished first, then Jae, Claudia, Linda, Faye and finally Martha, who's tiny feet meant she had a hard time adjusting.
"Alright, that's everyone. Let's go."
