————————————————————————The following Monday was a really disastrous day. Kurtis had spent the previous day convincing a few people that he wasn't dating Martha. Those people including Tyrese Innis (school athlete known for his practical jokes) and Jack Greenson (gamer with horrible grades).
As soon as he walked into his French class, there were cheers, as if he just finished a 10 mile pub crawl across Ireland.
"Oy oyy!"
"Ayyy!"
"He finally did it!"
Kurtis groaned and shook his head. He didn't get 6 hours of sleep plus 30 minutes during his journey to walk into this. Ms Fleur calmed the class down as he sat on his seat, next to the worst person to be with at this time: Diego Simmons.
"My brudda, you finally did it!"
"I didn't do anything, the image was taken in the wrong context at the wrong time. I'm not dating anyone."
"Ay bruv, don't lie. I know you been smashing dat ting."
"Ew. I'm 15." Kurtis moves away slightly with a weirded out expression. "I don't even know who took the picture-"
"Bruv that don't matter. You been exposed. You're not gay no more."
"I was gay?"
The following 98 minutes consisted of everyone asking about Martha and why they were ice skating. Things weren't going much better for Martha, who had begun sociology.
"Hey Martha?"
"Hm?" She turned her head to Samantha, along with all her friends looking at her. Rosa, Imarni and Taya all awaited an answer.
"Are you actually dating Kurtis?"
"Wh- no!"
"Are you sure? Because that snap seemed to suggest otherwise if you get what I mean."
"I get what you mean but I promise you, I'm not dating anyone." This situation seemed surprisingly hilarious for Martha. Unlike others, she didn't care much about her reputation, as long as she was a good person (probably got that from Matty Healy or something).
"Do you at least like him?" Samantha persisted, trying to find some sort of answer.
"Well platonically, yes."
"Are you sure-"
"Wow, leave her alone. She's said she's not dating." Samantha was suddenly interrupted by Justine Smith defending Martha. While normally hanging out with these girls, Justine doesn't always participate in the gossiping that occurs much. Instead she tries to take a more passive, civilised approach. She turned to Martha and asked nicely. "Are you dating or interested in Kurtis?"
"No."
"See? Problem solved. You lot, you're like vultures."
Martha let out a silent sigh of exhaustion. At this rate, it was going to be a long day. She could only imagine what Kurtis must've been going through. Then she realised that some good could come out of this situation. Alice wouldn't be constantly bothered by everyone because to them, it looks like Kurtis is dating her instead of Alice. Alice was finally free, but at the cost of Martha's freedom.
Equal exchange.
A soul for a soul.At break, Martha met up with Erin at their usual hangout space. Kurtis already had a hard enough time making his way there, constantly being asked who he was actually dating. It got to the point where his french teacher probably overheard everything. Kurtis tried his best to stay out of sight from anyone as he moved towards his friends, dodging Tristan, evading Christen and sliding past Samantha, only to be caught lacking by the people he least suspected.
"Kurtis, what happened on Saturday?" Callum inquired in his usual slightly assertive voice.
"It's fake. You'd know if you came." Kurtis attempted to move past the three, only stopped by Jakub.
"That doesn't answer whether you're dating Martha or not."
"Wha- I'm me, why would I date anyone?"
"I don't know, why would you?" Jakub shrugged and continued to pester the already annoyed boy.
"I wouldn't. Can I go now?"
"Yeah, go to your girlfriend and your ex." Callum then shifted into a slightly crouched pose with his arms out, pointing his fingers at Kurtis. "Boom."
"...you're a strange guy, Callum." Kurtis sighed and walked away from the two, finally making it to his friends. While walking past other groups, 2 out of 3 of them were talking about the image. It was painful to hear. He had now reached temporary salvation. His group where Alice was leaning on Claudia's shoulder while Dennis doodles in his maths book and Martha is explaining a movie to Jae. Kurtis hovered behind Alice, waiting until she noticed, which wasn't long as he had a very noticeable unsettling aura.
"...oh hi Kurtis. How's life?"
"Pretty annoying right now. Everyone thinks I'm dating Martha and that we broke up, or that I'm cheating on you."
"Yeah I got that too."
"I'm beginning to think it was better when half the people I met thought I was gay or bi."
"I mean... are you sure?"Alice raised an eyebrow with a slight smirk.
"Well no actually. I'd prefer neither."
Jae had overheard all the gossip but genuinely felt a bit bad; she unironically thought Kurtis was bi. She simply shrugged and decided to investigate who started the rumours herself. She thought it would be a great first impression on everyone. She subtly got up and left for her next lesson, hoping to find someone to ask.
